This senior technical advisory role provides subject matter expertise supporting actinide separations and plutonium processing programs. The Advisory Engineer initiates independent technical efforts, resolves the most complex nuclear process challenges, and influences technical direction across multiple disciplines. The position supports research, development, and implementation of plutonium processing flow sheets and separation technologies in operating nuclear facilities.
Key Responsibilities- Initiate and lead technical programs based on analysis of customer needs, mission drivers, and technology trends.
- Provide expert consultation on aqueous recovery flow sheets and safe implementation practices for plutonium processing facilities, including HB-Line.
- Provide consultation on pyrochemical flow sheets and safe implementation practices within facilities such as the K-Area complex.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in actinide separation theory, plutonium processing, chloride salt byproduct management, and offgas treatment systems.
- Develop solutions to the most complex technical problems and influence engineering direction across adjacent disciplines.
- Recommend and support research, development, testing, and application programs related to plutonium and uranium processing technologies.
- Prepare plans, schedules, budgets, and resource requirements for major technical tasks and monitor execution progress and quality.
- Communicate technical results through written reports, presentations, and technical manuscripts, and represent site programs to oversight organizations and professional groups.
- Mentor junior professionals and support knowledge transfer across the organization.
Advanced degree with significant experience in a relevant technical discipline. Typical expectations include:
- PhD with approximately 15 years of experience, MS with approximately 17 years of experience, or BS with approximately 21 years of experience.
- Experience in research and development focused on actinide separations.
- Demonstrated implementation support of plutonium processing flow sheets.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.
- Prior DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two years.
- Demonstrated development of novel plutonium or uranium processing techniques.
- Experience interfacing with operating nuclear facility personnel during deployment of plutonium flow sheets.
- Active facility clearance and eFOCI registration required at award for subcontractor performance.
- Limited business travel may be required to support technical discussions and presentations across the nuclear enterprise.
- Hybrid work arrangement with periodic onsite support required. Candidate must be local to the Aiken, SC area.
- Part time schedule up to 20 hours per week.
