RN - ECT Coordinator
Aiken Regional Medical Centers, Aiken, SC. 273‑bed acute care facility providing comprehensive healthcare services since 1917.
Responsibilities- Assess, plan, implement and coordinate day‑to‑day operations of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Services.
- Provide professional leadership in collaboration with ECT Psychiatrist, Anesthesia, OPS, PACU, Aurora Pavilion and other affiliated facilities.
- Manage non‑clinical services for patients and providers—billing, audits, transportation coordination, pre‑authorization, scheduling, registration, referrals, etc.
- Serve as point of contact for patients and families regarding care.
- Participate in development of goals for the ECT Program in line with facility objectives.
- Facilitate development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures, standard practices and protocols related to ECT.
- Coordinate, develop and maintain a concurrent system of performance improvement for the ECT service line and associated educational activities.
- In consultation with staff development, develop, coordinate and revise educational programs for nursing staff as needed.
- Address patient dissatisfaction and notify Director when necessary.
- Perform accurate and prompt body systems assessment, including pain assessment, to ensure patient safety before ECT treatment.
- Ensure patient safety in all aspects of the treatment process.
- Communicate effectively with all providers to coordinate ECT treatments in the PACU.
- Perform a timeout with the team prior to ECT delivery.
- Educate patient/family regarding ECT procedure and treatment regimen.
- Facilitate patient flow and provide direct care during all ECT treatments.
- Maintain equipment and supplies necessary for ECT treatment.
- Schedule all treatments, appointments with departments and consultants—including Anesthesia, OPS, PACU, Aurora, psychiatrists, and other providers—as needed.
- Coordinate benefits with Utilization Review Department.
- Pre‑certify outpatients with UR and insurance providers.
- Demonstrate appropriate clinical skills for a psychiatric population.
- Use monitoring equipment such as EEG monitors and ETCO2 peripheral nerve stimulator in the PACU.
- Perform monthly process improvement activities to ensure best practices in ECT delivery.
- Exhibit sound time‑management skills to prioritize patient care.
- Manage time effectively to minimize overtime and unnecessary time required of anesthesia and PACU nursing staff.
- Perform other non‑clinical duties: registration, authorization, scheduling, creation of care plans, transportation coordination, assessments, audits, and chart maintenance.
- Serve as main point of contact for patients, families, Aurora's UR/Assessment Team, and providers.
- Collaborate with Aurora's UR Team regarding inpatient and outpatient authorization, reviews, progress, deficits, and placement.
- Ensure PHQ‑9s are completed prior to and at each treatment; perform MoCA assessments multiple times throughout treatment; oversee ECT bay operations and ordering of all supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Graduate of an accredited or NLN‑approved RN program.
- Three years of experience in psychiatric nursing or one year of PACU experience.
- BLS and ACLS required (or to be obtained during orientation).
- PALS (or to be obtained within six months of employment).
- Current South Carolina nursing license.
- Successful completion of Handle With Care training within 30 days of hire.
