CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines) Technician

Location: Aiken, SC

Working Pattern: Full Time, 1st Shift – Monday through Thursday, 5:15am to 4:15pm.

Position Summary

The Wenzel Measuring Machine Operator operates and monitors coordinate measuring machines (CMM) in crankcase manufacturing, focusing on safely running existing measurement programs, ensuring part quality and supporting production as a confident operator of existing programs.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and monitor the Wenzel coordinate measuring machine during production, loading and executing existing measuring programs.
  • Perform dimensional, form, and position (GD&T) tolerance checks on crankcase components according to drawing specifications, including geometries, positions, and surface characteristics, and perform in‑process inspections during ongoing series production, ensuring correct setup and alignment of parts.
  • Interpret measurement results, identify deviations or out‑of‑tolerance conditions, perform root cause analysis, and initiate and track corrective actions.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, GD&T, and measurement specifications, and work with standard hand and electronic measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
  • Manage, care for, maintain, and monitor test and measuring equipment, with SAP support, and maintain measurement documentation and report results.
  • Support production with quality questions, sampling, and process approvals, and collaborate with production, quality, and engineering teams.
  • Keep the team informed, maintain cleanliness, order, and safety, support troubleshooting of basic machine or measurement issues, reduce non‑value‑added work, perform special projects as required, and promote a compliance culture in line with the Rolls‑Royce Code of Conduct.
Position Requirements
  • Completed vocational training as an industrial mechanic, tool mechanic, or comparable technical apprenticeship.
  • 3.5‑year technical apprenticeship in a metalworking field; or completion of an apprenticeship or training program.
  • 3 years of experience in mechanical, electrical, or industrial tooling in a heavy‑duty machining environment.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic ability to operate a coordinate measuring machine (Wenzel preferred) and to run and monitor existing measuring programs safely; confident handling of hand and electronic measuring instruments.
  • Focus on basic machine operation rather than full independent programming, with full programming capability developed on the job over time; AUKOM Level 1 and Level 2 and Quartis Basic and Advanced are target qualifications, completed on the job if not already held.
  • Basic understanding of measurement processes, coordinate systems, machine axes, and alignment; ability to read blueprints, GD&T, angles, directions, and part orientation; basic ability to inspect surface roughness and contours (profilometer and caliper); and basic knowledge of OSHA safety requirements.
  • Strong quality and responsibility awareness with a structured, independent way of working; good interpersonal, organizational, communication, and teamwork skills; proficiency with a PC and MS Office; flexibility and willingness to pursue further qualification and deployment at additional inspection or production equipment; willingness to work shift work, currently two and potentially three shifts, and occasional weekends, plus overtime; and the ability to lift, push, and pull weights in the 20‑60 lb range.
