SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, assists the Director of Transportation in managing the day-to-day operations of school transportation services to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of students. Supports compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists the Director in overseeing daily operations of the Transportation Department.
- Provides direct support and guidance to Area Transportation Supervisors, drivers, and monitors.
- Coordinates responses to transportation-related concerns from parents, staff, and schools.
- Supports accident and incident investigations and ensures follow-up procedures are completed.
- Helps monitor bus routes for efficiency and safety; assists with routing software and logistics planning.
- Participates in driver recruitment, screening, and onboarding, including license verification and testing.
- Assists in the coordination of in-service and safety training sessions.
- Monitors vehicle inspections and maintenance reports for accuracy and compliance.
- Maintains transportation data and assists with the preparation of reports for local and state compliance.
- Helps interpret transportation policies and procedures for staff and the public.
- Recommends procedural improvements to enhance service quality and operational efficiency.
- May serve as acting Director in the absence of the Director of Transportation.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE:
Requires an Associate’s degree in business administration, transportation management, or a related field, supplemented by three to five years of progressively responsible experience in school transportation or fleet operations, including some supervisory experience. A Bachelor's degree is preferred but not required.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements and a School Bus Driver Certification. Completion of state or district-level transportation management training is preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises assigned transportation staff, which may include Area Transportation Supervisors, dispatchers, bus drivers, and monitors, as delegated by the Director of Transportation. Responsibilities include assisting with training, assigning and directing work, monitoring performance, addressing complaints, and helping to resolve problems in coordination with the Director.
LANGUAGE
SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of district.
MATHEMATICAL
SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of assessment data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to quickly assess employee, departmental and administrative needs and provide timely feedback.
