OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Common Collection System – AB, the Operations Summer Intern Alberta role will support daily activities within the Alberta Operations Team. Responsibilities include managing operational email boxes, scheduling, database management, meeting support, and field work in project data collection through site visits and contract analysis across Alberta.

This position requires residency in Calgary or Lethbridge, Alberta, and the ability for occasional travel throughout Alberta.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides back‑up assistance in managing the operations mailbox, ensuring timely responses to inquiries by preparing draft responses for staff review and approval.
  • Works with staff to support engagement with key stakeholders through administrative tasks such as organizing and scheduling calls.
  • Travels to municipalities in southern Alberta, collection depots, and recycling facilities to complete on‑site inspections.
    • Verify internal record keeping.
    • Verify contract details such as service types, hours, and accepted materials.
    • Prepare field reports summarizing observations, variances, risks, and recommended actions.
  • Attends meetings to take minutes and later input action items into the tracking system to allow for centralized monitoring of tasks assigned to team members.
  • Assists with the development and execution of projects involving data collection through survey tabulation and field observations.
  • Consolidates project data collection for analysis.
  • Conducts data verification to ensure key details are logged in tracking sheets and databases.
  • Carries out internet and telephone data collection exercises to capture critical municipal and First Nation waste program delivery details.
  • Manages files, informational resources, and databases on SharePoint.
  • Identifies best practices across operations to streamline day‑to‑day activities that drive operations.
QUALIFICATIONS Education
  • College and/or University studies in business, project management, and/or waste management are an asset.
Experience
  • Experienced in effectively resolving issues and fostering strong relationships with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Experience in administrative, operational, and site inspections is an asset.
  • Understanding of Alberta business practices, with ideal candidates living in Calgary or Lethbridge.
Knowledge/Competencies/Skills
  • Experienced in effectively resolving issues and fostering strong relationships with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Experience in administrative, operational, and/or field work is an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office or equivalent is an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required to maintain professional communication with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Detail‑oriented with excellent organizational skills and time management.
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • All CM employees work 40 hours per week.
  • This position is primarily remote but will require occasional on‑site field study work across Alberta or in‑person meetings as required.
  • Additional or flexible hours may occasionally be required during the May–August internship period to support operational needs.
  • Candidates must be based in Alberta and able to travel within the province when needed.
  • A valid driver’s license, comprehensive vehicle insurance, and a willingness to drive long distances are required.
PAY TRANSPARENCY Expected Compensation
  • A salary of $14,700 for the 4‑month term.
  • The salary listed complies with the Ontario Employment Standards Act and reflects working full‑time hours.
