Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the successful candidate will perform locksmith duties and install and maintain the associated hardware, liaise with various staff regarding the installation and maintenance of keying systems, and weld and maintain steel doors and frames.
Major Duties- Provide assistance to the board with locksmithing and the installation and maintenance of associated hardware
- Re‑key various types of locks
- Install locks and perform necessary repairs to ensure they are in working condition
- Install security devices
- Set up and maintain master key systems; manage high‑security key systems such as Primus and high‑precision machinery to ensure the systems operate correctly
- Serve as signing authority for the high‑security Primus system
- Imprint locks
- Ensure keys are cut appropriately according to standards and codes
- Install and repair various hardware, including door closers and panic bars
- Assess specifications for new schools and provide recommendations
- Maintain magnetic locks, card access readers, electronic strikes, key‑override systems, high‑security systems, restricted security systems, and complete aluminum door service systems
- Order all materials and supplies via P‑card and collect blanket POs
- Coordinate portable moves in the summer and key locked portables to the new site system
- Receive and update work orders and complete and submit time sheets electronically
- Liaise with various staff regarding the installation and maintenance of keying systems
- Coordinate decisions and educate staff regarding installation and maintenance of keying systems, as well as the distribution of keys for the system to principals, custodians, supervisors, suppliers, and teachers
- Coordinate the needs of the parties involved with contractors
- Interact personally with the fire department and the fire prevention officer
- Estimate materials needed for the operation of the chosen system and order the materials as assigned
- Maintain records for all master key systems on a computerized system
- Review new drawings and sketches for how jobs are to be performed
- Weld and maintain metal doors and frames
- Install, repair, and service steel, wood, and aluminum doors and frames; hollow metal doors and frames and weld steel doors and frames
- Install, service, and repair metal doors and frames to meet building and fire codes and general safety standards
- Fabricate old equipment and parts as required and assist carpenters in cutting door parts
- Assist glazier in unloading large pieces of glass from orders
- Maintain contractors’ key cabinets for every school
Computer, printer, word processor, photocopier, hand tools (saw, hammer, etc.), power tools (saw, drill, etc.), welding equipment, electrical equipment, small locksmithing tools, advanced key‑cutting equipment, plasma‑cutting equipment, and a truck.
Qualifications- Secondary school diploma (or equivalent) and successful completion of locksmithing courses and/or certifications in keying, advanced hardware, locksmithing, and/or Medeco systems
- Valid Ontario welder (456A) certificate of qualification
- 1–2 years of related employment experience
- Keyboarding skills and familiarity with a computerized system for recording information are a plus
- Carpentry and electrical skills are a plus for performing required installations of hinges, switches, etc.
- Sound knowledge of school/board safety standards, the Ontario Building Code and Fire Code
