The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for a Special Education Teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH), Job Code 006, TS 380 (190 Days), Starting salary: $48,006.96. Collective Bargaining Unit AEA. This is a State Teachers Retirement System position.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
* Valid Ohio Special Education Licensure in Hearing Impaired K-12 within 2 years of start date of the assignment, you must have Hearing Impaired (PK-12) added to your Ohio Intervention Specialist License;
* Evidence of proficient sign language skills in CASE (Conceptually Accurate Signed English). A CASE proficiency assessment will be conducted as part of the pre-interview and/or interview process;
* Evidence of successful teaching.

POSITION
DESCRIPTION:
* Helps students learn subject matter and/or skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible men and women;
* Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior;
* Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students;
* Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives;
* Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required;
* Counsels with colleagues, students and/or parents on a regular basis;
* Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct;
* For the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure;
* Maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
* Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance;
* Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations;
* Accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned and strives to maintain and improve professional competence;
* Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required;
* Assists in the development of the IEP, including the development of specific instructional objectives and unique services to meet the needs of students;
* Makes modifications and accommodations of the classroom environment for the student with a disability in the regular or special education classroom;
* Monitors student's progress in accordance with the IEP;
* Reports to and carries out any other responsibilities as assigned by the building principal.
