Position: LIBRARIAN MEDIA SPECIALIST- 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR

LIBRARIAN MEDIA SPECIALIST –  SCHOOL YEAR (Job Code 033, TS 380 – 190 Days) – Akron Public Schools

Location: Akron Public Schools

Salary: Starting Salary Range: $48,967.10 – State Teachers Retirement Position. Supplemental contract may be issued for two weeks of extended time. Collective Bargaining Unit: AEA

Qualifications
  • Master's in Library Science, Instructional Technology, or a related field
  • Ohio Media Specialist certification or teaching licensure
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in teaching and/or library services with a strong focus on instructional collaboration
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate digital tools and information literacy into curriculum
  • Experience with various social, cultural, and economic student populations
  • Experience in an urban setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively with administrators, staff, parents, students, and community
  • Willingness and ability to plan and develop new educational initiatives
  • Commitment to use best practices and research-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment
Essential Functions
  • Collaborate with students and members of the learning community to analyze learning and information needs, locate and use resources, and communicate information provided by those resources
  • Maintain current research knowledge on teaching and learning and apply findings to various situations
  • Instruct students to access, evaluate, and use information from multiple sources to learn, think, and create new knowledge
  • Maintain a current collection that meets diverse needs, developed collaboratively and in consultation with school library resources
  • Act as curricular leader and full participant on the instructional team
  • Update personal skills and knowledge to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and staff
  • Work with teachers, administrators, and staff to expand understanding of information issues and provide specific opportunities to develop literacy skills, including ICT use
  • Identify links across student information needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and resources across print, non-print, and electronic media
  • Lead the school community in developing policies, practices, and curricula guiding students to college and career readiness
  • Commit to collaboration, designing authentic learning tasks and assessments, and integrating communication skills with subject matter and arts standards
  • Provide leadership and expertise in acquiring and evaluating information resources in all formats
  • Promote awareness of information issues within collaborative relationships with teachers, administrators, students, and others
  • Model for students and others strategies for locating, accessing, and evaluating information within and beyond the library media center
  • Manage electronic resources, focusing on quality, ethical use, and constant improvement
  • Collaborate to define library media program policies, guiding all related activities
  • Advocate for the library media program, steering it creatively in the 21st century
  • Manage staff, budgets, equipment, and facilities, planning, executing, and evaluating program quality daily
  • Provide student leadership opportunities through literacy activities, integrating arts
  • Communicate program goals, statistics, and programming to Media Services and building principal
  • Report to and be supervised by the Building Principal
