Assistant Professor in Counseling Psychology

The Department of Psychology at the University of Akron invites applications for a (tenure-track) Assistant Professor position starting in August 2027. We seek scholars who will lead collaborations among faculty, students, and community partners that address questions of well-being, public safety, and civic engagement.

We are seeking a teacher/scholar who will offer a strong contribution to UA through teaching, research, service, and collaboration. Within the broad focus of Counseling Psychology, we seek a scholar focused on teaching and researching Counseling Psychology content related to social justice, multiculturalism broadly defined, ethics, and clinical practica. This faculty will also assist with the development of a terminal master's program in Counseling Psychology.

It is also important that the successful candidate can effectively teach undergraduate and graduate psychology courses and effectively advise/mentor graduate students in their research activities.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD in Counseling/Clinical Psychology, be licensed or licensed eligible, and teach undergraduate and graduate psychology courses.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants should demonstrate a program of research with the potential for external funding.

The Psychology Department

Within the University of Akron, the Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences, and the Department of Psychology, research, teaching, and service are central values. The successful candidate will join 13 full-time faculty with well-established doctoral programs in Counseling Psychology, I/O Psychology, and Adult Development and Aging. The I/O Psychology graduate program also offers a terminal M.A. degree, and the department offers a baccalaureate major in Psychology.

The applicant for the current position will become a core faculty member in the Counseling Psychology Program, along with three other full-time, tenure-track faculty members. The Psychology Department's three established Doctoral programs in I/O Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and Adult Development and Aging have a synergistic relationship for curricula and research collaboration.
