The Transmission Planning Engineer will study and plan the safe, reliable operation of transmission and subtransmission lines and substations across First Energy’s transmission and subtransmission systems. The role includes performing studies on generation and load interconnections, developing the capital portfolio for reliability projects, and providing support to the Operations Center during storms and abnormal system events.
Responsibilities- Provide technical support and studies to develop transmission and subtransmission infrastructure projects, plans, and capital budgets.
- Complete bulk and area transmission system studies in compliance with NERC, PJM, and FE planning criteria.
- Propose and economically justify recommended mitigation projects or operating solutions when capital projects cannot be implemented in time.
- Help develop annual capital budgets by requesting cost estimates and preparing presentations.
- Conduct studies for new load, generator, and merchant transmission project connections.
- Support Operations Centers during severe weather and abnormal system events with rapid evaluations.
- Represent First Energy in industry groups (e.g., NERC, RFC, PJM) and promote industry best practices.
- Prepare responses to state and federal commission requests for information.
- Provide technical testimony for regulatory and legal inquiries.
- Assist in preparing compliance submittals related to planning activities.
- Participate in maintaining the department’s planning philosophy, facility connection documentation, and related procedures.
- Prepare work products for governmental agencies (public utility commissions, FERC, etc.).
- Travel throughout the First Energy system and to industry events as required.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution; or equivalent professional engineer license, engineering‑technology degree, or advanced degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program. Electrical Engineering is preferred.
- A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution; or equivalent alternatives. Electrical Engineering is preferred.
- A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution; or equivalent alternatives. Electrical Engineering is preferred.
- A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience with a BS in Engineering, or 7 years with a BS in Engineering Technology.
