Code Compliance Inspector II

This position requires responsible inspection, data collection, and enforcement work in controlling nuisances and housing and zoning violations as defined by City ordinances. The responsibilities include reviewing complaints, conducting on‑site inspections, gathering documentary evidence, posting notices, verifying compliance, consulting with occupants and owners, coordinating with other City departments, traveling to multiple locations as needed, and maintaining accurate records.

• Receive and document complaints about high grass, weeds, junk motor vehicles, sidewalk obstructions, graffiti, postings, exterior trash, and zoning violations.
• Conduct interior and exterior inspections of residential premises and vacant lots.
• Take photographs and record all pertinent information related to violations.
• Research property ownership using tax maps, deed records, and other municipal records.
• Compile and maintain lists of verified complaints, posted properties, and non‑compliant sites.
• Post notices of code violations and follow up on compliance through re‑inspections.
• Communicate violations and orders to owners, occupants, and building managers in a courteous and professional manner.
• Collate and submit detailed, accurate records for City review.
• Refer non‑compliant cases to appropriate City offices for enforcement and may provide testimony in court.
• Coordinate with Police Division, Law Department, and other agencies to resolve nuisance, housing, and zoning problems.

• Completion of two full years of college coursework at an accredited institution or a comparable combination of paid experience in customer service or investigative work.
• Minimum of one year of paid experience in customer service field operations, or a substitution on a year‑for‑year basis with paid experience in public contact investigative work.
• Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
• Knowledge of City of Akron rules, regulations, and ordinances related to nuisance control and housing and zoning code enforcement.
• Skill in representing the organization to agencies, staff, and citizens with a courteous, helpful, and professional attitude.
• Ability to gather relevant facts through records research, interpret City codes, ordinances, and regulations, and recognize conditions that deviate from established standards.
• Proficiency in using computerized and manual record systems to effectively record, update, and organize information.
• Strong written communication skills; ability to document findings legibly and succinctly.
• Capacity to interpret maps and use both manual and computerized map tools.
• Physical ability to climb and descend stairs, walk on uneven surfaces, and drive to multiple locations.
• Ability to manage communication with individuals who may be hostile or indifferent, remaining calm and courteous under stress.
• Ability to maintain a clear, accurate record of all job functions performed.
