Code Compliance Inspector

This position involves inspection, data collection, and enforcement work pertaining to nuisances and housing and zoning violations as defined by City ordinances. The employee receives complaints, conducts site inspections to gather facts and ascertain property ownership, and secures compliance with City ordinances and housing and zoning codes governing high grass and weeds, junk motor vehicles, sidewalk hazards and obstructions, exterior trash conditions, zoning violations, housing issues and related nuisances.

Assistance to senior code compliance inspectors and use of independent judgment under general supervision is part of the role.

Key responsibilities include:

receiving and investigating complaints about high grass and weeds, junk motor vehicles, sidewalk obstructions, graffiti, postings in public right‑of‑way, exterior trash conditions, and zoning violations; posting housing orders and notices of code violations on vacant lots, unoccupied buildings, occupied properties and motor vehicles; conducting interior and exterior inspections of residential premises; taking photographs of violations; researching records to acquire owner information;

compiling lists of verified complaints and properties in non‑compliance; communicating violations and orders to owners, occupants, and building managers; driving to locations for reinspections; referring non‑compliance cases to relevant City offices; answering citizen inquiries; consulting with occupants, owners, and building managers to explain housing codes and consequences; working with Police Division, Law Department, and other City offices to resolve nuisance, housing, and zoning problems;

providing testimony in court; and maintaining detailed and accurate records.

Qualifications:

completion of two full years of college coursework at an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of paid experience in customer‑service field operations, or a substitution of paid experience for coursework on a year‑for‑year basis; possession of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license; knowledge of City of Akron rules, regulations and ordinances related to nuisance control and housing and zoning code enforcement;

skill in representing the organization to other agencies, staff, and citizens with a courteous, helpful, accurate, and professional attitude in all telephone, electronic and personal contact; ability to gather relevant facts through records research and inspection activity; ability to understand and interpret relevant City codes, ordinances and regulations; ability to use computerized and manual record systems; ability to write legibly and succinctly;

ability to interpret maps; effective communication skills under stressful conditions; physical ability to climb and descend stairs, walk on uneven surfaces, and operate a motor vehicle. A list of essential job functions is available upon request.
