Summary

The Behavioral Health (BH) Safety Manager supports the hospital-wide behavioral health strategy and aligns aggression management initiatives with organizational goals and all accreditation and regulatory standards. This includes the development and implementation of policies and protocols that impact multiple departments and service lines. This position requires participation in hospital committees, cross-functional teams, and external partnerships (e.g., advocacy, regulatory bodies, professional organizations).

In addition, is responsible for coordinating the training of ACH staff in de-escalation and aggression management techniques in accordance with ACH selected vendor/program. This includes supervising trainers and managing the training schedule, maintaining program materials and data collection, and monitoring trainer staffing needs and completion of required trainings. In addition, the BH Safety Manager will have oversight of the hospital's Behavior Response Team (BRT) along with coordinating the review and rounding of patients in the system with purple banners.

This position will also serve as a consultant regarding appropriate BPPE use and requirements. The BH Safety Manager will design and oversee data collection, analysis, and reporting for program outcomes, compliance, and continuous improvement. This includes benchmarking best practices, implementing innovative approaches and representing ACH in external forums, partnerships, and advocacy efforts related to behavioral health and workplace safety. This position will oversee the budget for program resources, training, and equipment and reports directly to the Behavioral Health Service Line Director.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on workplace safety and compliance across hospital committees and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Builds and maintains external partnerships to advance best practices in workplace safety at local, state, and national levels.
  • Designs and delivers evidence-based training programs to promote a safe work environment.
  • Oversees the aggression management program, including budgeting for training and equipment.
  • Leads coordination and delivery of aggression management training, ensuring accessibility and compliance for all staff.
  • Maintains trainer certification, monitors staffing needs, and ensures trainer competency through required sessions.
  • Tracks and reports training compliance data, implementing continuous improvement strategies to address gaps.
  • Directs the Behavior Response Team (BRT), including response coordination, policy development, and proactive rounding protocols.
  • Educates departments on BRT services and activation procedures, reviews patient cases and monitors outcomes.
  • Facilitates regular tabletop drills and department specific In Situ trainings to reinforce response readiness.
  • Advises the Workplace Violence Oversight Committee on BPPE use and integrates BPPE guidance into training programs.
  • Performs additional duties as needed to support safety, training, and response initiatives.
  • Other Information Technical Expertise

    1. Strong communication, organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills is required.

    2. Experience working with all levels with an organization is required.

    3. Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.

    4. Experience in caring for behavioral health population preferred

    5. Experience with education, training and adult learning principles required

    Education and Experience

    1.

    Education:

    Master's degree in nursing, psychology, social work or other clinically relevant field is required.

    2. Certification:
    Advanced certification in behavioral management techniques is strongly preferred.

    3. Licensure:
    Currently licensed to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio or Licensed Independent Social Worker (LIWS) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) required.

    4. Years of relevant experience: 5 years of leadership experience in high acuity patient settings such as behavioral health and emergency department where de-escalation, behavioral management techniques, and BPPE are frequently utilized is required.

    5. Years of supervisory experience: 3 years providing behavioral management oversight and policy and protocol development is preferred

    6. Years of relevant training experience: 3 years training in behavioral health aggression management required

    7. Ongoing professional development and continuing education required.
