The language interpreter is a part-time employee who will work up to 24 hours per week as needed, with a daily 30‑minute unpaid lunch. The interpreter is assigned to a school location and is responsible for providing oral, written, and typed interpretations/translations at the building and district levels to ensure parents have information about their child’s education in a language they understand.

Hours are adjusted to support after‑school or evening parent programs as needed.

The interpreter reports to the building principal and is evaluated by the building principal and Learning Specialist twice a year.

• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
• Orally fluent in both English and Swahili.
• Fluently able to write and type both English and Swahili.
• Valid Ohio driver’s license and reliable transportation.

• Experience working with parents, staff, and community in the target language and in schools.
• Familiar with technology.
• Respected in the community and understands confidentiality importance.
• Fluent in more than two languages.
• Experience as a language interpreter.
• Flexible schedule.
• Effective communication skills.

• Provide written, typed, and oral translations in Swahili.
• Collaborate with parents, teachers, principals, and students to ensure parents have information in a comprehensible language.
• Provide accurate oral and written translations.
• Adjust hours to attend evening and after‑school meetings as needed.
• Maintain ready access to telephone/cellphone as needed.
• Serve as language liaison between staff and families.
• Effectively communicate and translate for staff, students, and families when required.
• Provide language assistance in school and classrooms as needed.
• Attend school and district meetings where interpreters are needed.
• Provide support in person, via computer, or phone in targeted language as needed.
• Drive between school and district buildings and across the city to provide translations as needed.

The physical demands of the job include seeing, talking, hearing, and typing; walking, sitting, driving, standing, kneeling or crouching; handling and carrying objects; lifting up to 25 pounds. Travel to school sites may be required. Reasonable accommodations can be made.
