Definition
This is routine custodial and housekeeping work in the Akron Public Schools. An employee in this class cleans school buildings on a daily basis; prepare facilities for the next school day for teachers, students and visitors; maintain grounds; perform all applicable custodial duties.
Characteristic Work
- Ensure safety of students
- Assist in air handler and classroom filter changes
- Shovel and remove snow from school grounds and city sidewalks
- Mow school lawns
- Maintain a clean and safe boiler room
- Sweep, vacuum, mop and wax floors
- Empty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails and pencil sharpeners
- Refill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and bathroom tissue dispensers throughout the building Remove cobwebs, clean windows and chalkboards
- Secure building at night
- Clean and maintain custodial equipment and materials
- Clean and sanitize restrooms
- Promote good safety practices and procedures
- Interact in a positive manner with supervisors, staff, students and parents
- Responsible for the proper cleanliness and upkeep of the facilities
- Organize, direct and participate in custodial and routine maintenance of buildings
- Maintain records and complete reports
- Clean all water coolers (fountains)
- Clean hallway glass displays and showcases
- Clean and sanitize locker rooms
- Ensure all classrooms are properly secured
- Maintain school grounds and landscape
- Make minor repairs to building fixtures and equipment
- Move heavy articles such as desks, tables, file cabinets, etc.
- Perform custodial work in care of buildings and surrounding grounds
- Polish furniture, woodwork, and horizontal surfaces as necessary
- Report damage to building and equipment which require repair to their immediate supervisor
- Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
- Trim bushes and trees
- Wash walls, mop, scrub and wax floors
- Reports any activity that may be detrimental to the Board of Education
- Complete paperwork as required by supervisor
- Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with, supervisors, co-workers, subordinates and building occupants
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head and Assistant Custodian
- Exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
- Attend meetings and seminars as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited High School or G.E.D.
- A minimum of one year paid related experience
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Ability to listen effectively, actively
- Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures
- Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels
- Knowledge of the proper care and storage of chemicals
- Knowledge of the care of materials, methods and practices essential to proper cleaning of a facility
- Knowledge of the care of sweepers, vacuum machines, mops, brushes, cleaning fluids and other cleaning materials and equipment
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to problem solve
- Ability to learn proper use of materials, methods and practices used in cleaning operations
- Knowledge of how to clean up and disposal of blood borne pathogens
- Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces
Competitive Examination Process
This is a classified position.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST.
WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
