Executive Director — Executive Summary Job Description
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief administrative and operational leader of Temple
Israel, responsible for translating the Temple’s mission and strategic priorities into effective,
sustainable operations. Reporting to Board leadership and working in close partnership with
clergy, the ED provides executive oversight across all non-clergy functions of the organization,
ensuring operational excellence, financial stewardship, and a high-quality congregational
experience.
The ED acts as a strategic partner to lay and professional leadership, aligning day-to-day
operations with long-term vision while supporting strong governance practices. This role
requires a leader who can manage complexity, balance strategic thinking with hands-on
execution, and foster collaboration among staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders.
Core Areas of ResponsibilityPartner with clergy and lay leadership to implement strategic initiatives, support Board
and committee work, and ensure effective organizational planning, reporting, and
execution.
Provide executive oversight of synagogue operations, facilities management, vendor
relationships, and security coordination, ensuring a safe, efficient, and welcoming
environment for all programs and events.
Financial Oversight & AdministrationOversee financial operations, internal controls, and reporting, ensuring transparency,
accuracy, and alignment with Board policies and fiduciary responsibilities.
Lead and supervise administrative staff, ensuring appropriate staffing structures,
accountability, and professional development to support Temple priorities.
Oversee organizational communications and information systems, ensuring alignment
with institutional goals and effective engagement with members and the broader
community.
Development, Membership & Community EngagementSupport fundraising, donor stewardship, and community partnerships in collaboration
with clergy and volunteer leadership; oversee administrative processes that support
membership growth, retention, and engagement.
Qualifications & Leadership ProfileThe ideal candidate brings senior-level nonprofit or organizational leadership experience, with
demonstrated success overseeing operations, finances, and staff while working effectively with
boards and volunteer leadership. A bachelor’s degree is preferred, with a master’s degree a plus
or equivalent executive experience. Familiarity with synagogue or nonprofit systems (e.g.,
Shul Cloud, Quick Books) is desirable, along with flexibility to support evening and weekend
