Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct, evidence-based nursing care to post-surgical orthopedic, pain management and plastics patients within an inpatient, outpatient and surgical setting. This role is responsible for comprehensive patient assessment, implementation of individualized care plans, management of post-operative needs, and support of early mobility and rehabilitation goals. The RN collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality patient outcomes in accordance with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and clinical best practices.
Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities
Perform ongoing assessments of musculoskeletal status, neurovascular integrity, pain level, and overall post operative condition. Identify early signs of complications, including infection, deep vein thrombosis, neurovascular compromise, and impaired wound healing.
Document assessments, interventions, and responses in accordance with hospital standards.
Provide care for surgical wounds, dressings, and drains; maintain sterility and prevent post operative infections. Manage patient positioning and limb support to promote safe recovery and protect surgical sites. Administer prescribed medications, including analgesics, anticoagulants, antibiotics, and IV therapies.
Utilize pharmacologic and non pharmacologic pain management strategies, including heat/cold therapy and elevation. Monitor effectiveness of interventions and collaborate with providers to adjust pain control strategies as needed.
Assist patients with early mobilization, safe transfers, and ambulation in coordination with physical and occupational therapy. Reinforce therapy goals and techniques to support functional recovery and prevent complications related to immobility.
Provide education on post operative expectations, medication regimens, wound care, mobility restrictions, and use of assistive devices. Prepare patients and caregivers for discharge by reviewing home care instructions and necessary follow up appointments.
Communicate with surgeons, hospitalists, therapists, case managers, and nursing leadership to coordinate care plans. Participate in rounds, handoff communications, and team discussions to promote continuity of care.
Adhere to organizational protocols, Joint Commission standards, and nursing practice guidelines.
Maintain a safe environment through fall prevention strategies, infection control practices, and patient specific safety measures.
All other duties not specifically assigned.
Position Requirements
Education:
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN/ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
Experience:
Minimum 1-2 years of acute care experience, with preferred experience in orthopedic, surgical, or post-operative inpatient training- willing to train.
Technical
Skills:
Strong knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology. Excellent assessment skills, particularly in neurovascular monitoring. High proficiency in patient education and communication. Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and a focus on patient-centered care. Physical stamina to assist with patient mobility, transferring, and repositioning
Certifications/Licenses/Registrations:
Current license to practice as registered nurse in the State of Ohio; BLS required within 1 month of hire, ACLS preferred, Orthopedic Nurse Certification (ONC) is beneficial but not required.
