Job Summary

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the administrative and clinical oversight of all nursing services within the residential, inpatient, and withdrawal management programs. The DON serves as the primary nursing leader for the facility and is responsible for supervising and supporting all Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Resident Technicians to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate patient care.

The DON oversees day-to-day nursing operations, staffing, medication administration processes, patient monitoring, infection prevention, nursing documentation, quality improvement initiatives, and regulatory compliance. This position works collaboratively with the Medical Director, Executive Director, and interdisciplinary treatment team to ensure high-quality nursing care and operational excellence in accordance with OhioDBH, Joint Commission, and facility standards.

Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Resident Technicians.

Duties of the Position
  • Nursing Leadership and Oversight
    • Provide leadership, direction, and oversight for all nursing services within residential, inpatient, and withdrawal management programs.
    • Supervise all nursing personnel, including RNs, LPNs, and Resident Technicians.
    • Ensure nursing care is delivered in accordance with physician orders, nursing standards of practice, and facility protocols.
    • Oversee implementation of withdrawal monitoring protocols, including CIWA, COWS, and other approved clinical assessment tools.
    • Ensure completion of nursing assessments, patient monitoring, medication administration, vital signs, and nursing documentation.
    • Monitor patient health status and communicate significant changes or concerns to the Medical Director or licensed provider.
    • Ensure continuity of nursing care across all shifts and levels of care.
    • Promote a culture of patient safety, professionalism, accountability, and compassionate care.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning and coordination of patient care.
    • Assist nursing staff with clinical decision-making, emergency response, and escalation procedures as needed.
    • Assist with management of medical emergencies and critical incidents.
  • Staff Supervision and Development
    • Recruit, interview, hire, orient, train, supervise, and evaluate nursing staff and Resident Technicians.
    • Develop staffing schedules and maintain appropriate staffing levels to support safe patient care.
    • Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, education, and professional development opportunities.
    • Conduct performance evaluations and address disciplinary or performance concerns in collaboration with Human Resources.
    • Facilitate staff meetings, shift communication, and clinical education initiatives.
    • Ensure all nursing staff maintain required licensure, certifications, and competencies.
  • Nursing Operations and Medication Management
    • Oversee nursing workflows and daily nursing operations within the facility.
    • Ensure medications are administered safely and accurately in accordance with physician orders and facility policies.
    • Oversee medication storage, inventory, documentation, medication counts, and disposal procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with controlled substance handling requirements and medication safety standards.
    • Collaborate with prescribing providers and pharmacy services regarding medication-related concerns.
    • Monitor nursing documentation and electronic health record compliance for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
    • Develop, review, and implement nursing policies, procedures, and clinical workflows.
    • Monitor infection prevention and control practices throughout the facility.
    • Ensure proper response and documentation of medical incidents, medication variances, and patient safety events.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including OhioDBH and Joint Commission standards.
    • Lead nursing participation in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
    • Participate in audits, inspections, surveys, and corrective action planning.
    • Maintain readiness for regulatory and accreditation reviews.
    • Monitor incident reports, medication variances, and patient safety concerns and implement corrective actions as appropriate.
    • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of clinical incidents.
  • Communication and Interdisciplinary Collaboration
    • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, therapists, case managers, and administrative leadership to ensure coordinated patient care.
