This is skilled welding and fabricating work.
An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled work using an acetylene, heliarc, electric‑arc, MIG and TIG welding unit, plasma cutter, plasma torch, grinder, and other tools to weld, cut, or fabricate ferrous and nonferrous metals. Assists in the general maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
Work under the general supervision of an Equipment Mechanic Foreman. Assignments provide considerable independence in developing work methods.
Performs a combination of welding duties such as heliarc welding, oxyacetylene cutting, plasma cutting, welding and brazing, electric arc‑air cutting and gouging of metals, arc welding of various metals, sheet metal work, repair of hand tools and design and installation of hitches. Cuts and shapes metals to fabricate parts for, make alterations to, and repair heavy‑duty and industrial equipment, vehicles, and structures in the shop and in the field using welding equipment.
Works from blueprints, sketches, verbal or oral instructions. Cuts, grinds, lays out, positions, and welds fabricated, cast, and forged metal component parts. Selects proper welding heat and proper type and size of electrodes. Brazes, solders, and coats ferrous and nonferrous metals. Preheats and cleans metal. Cuts, welds, and otherwise fabricates various attachments or modifications for all types of automotive, construction and related equipment.
Cuts and welds culvert pipe. Repairs various equipment by welding cracks and breaks. Forges, tempers, and sharpens various kinds of tools and special parts. Operates and maintains welding shop machinery and equipment. Prepares estimates of labor and materials. Orders welding and fabricating supplies and equipment; locates repair parts and drives to acquire them as directed. Enters and retrieves data using a computerized fleet management system.
Assembles and disassembles equipment and vehicles as needed during the performance of welding and fabricating repairs. Performs basic equipment maintenance and light mechanical repairs. Uses aerial lifts, bucket trucks and ladders. Performs related work as required.
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of paid experience in welding or fabricating, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED EDUCATION OR TRAINING. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
Considerable knowledge of the practices, materials, methods, equipment, machinery and tools of the welding and fabricating trade. Thorough knowledge of oxyacetylene, heliarc, and electric arc welding processes, plasma cutting and torching, MIG and TIG welding. Considerable knowledge of the properties of ferrous and nonferrous metals. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of welding and fabricating including hazards involving compressed gases, stored energy, and electrical shock.
Skill in the use of welding and fabricating equipment. Ability to set up all types of welding and fabricating equipment. Ability to use and care for tools and equipment used in welding and metal fabricating. Ability to perform fabrication, layout, and design work. Ability to work safely in a team environment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work from plans and specifications.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and other City departments. Ability to read, write and communicate orally with other City employees. Ability to work at heights using bucket trucks, aerial lifts, and ladders. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. List of essential job functions available upon request.
