Job Responsibilities and Activities
- Change and assemble various brooms on street sweepers.
- Operate heavy equipment: dump truck, salt spreader, truck with plow attachment, front‑end loader, and large packer truck for leaf removal.
- Check wear on sweeper brooms, remove and reattach main and side brooms with bolts.
- Wash and grease sweepers; inspect for mechanical issues and deliver units to the Motor Equipment Division for repair when necessary.
- Deliver supplies and replacement brooms to sweepers in the field as required.
- Participate in or lead a work crew activity.
- Complete and submit required paperwork such as pre‑trip/post‑trip forms for equipment, logs, employee leave requests, emergency contact information, etc.
- Perform related work as required.
- Minimum one year of paid semi‑skilled laboring experience.
- Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
- Possession of, or must obtain within 120 days of employment, a valid State of Ohio class B commercial driver’s license without an air‑brake restriction.
- Knowledge of tools, materials, equipment, and procedures used to change and assemble street sweeper brooms.
- Knowledge of and skill in the effective and safe operation of automotive and heavy equipment commonly assigned to this level.
- Knowledge of component parts of such equipment, performance limits, and preventive maintenance necessary to keep equipment in satisfactory operation.
- Knowledge of traffic laws of the State of Ohio and the City of Akron.
- Use and care for broom tools and equipment.
- Perform a variety of laboring tasks.
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions, rules, and guidelines.
- Work under adverse weather conditions outdoors.
- Effectively lead work crew activity.
- Safely operate motor vehicles and construction equipment.
This position will require working different shifts throughout the year and will require working overtime when needed, sometimes often.
