Job Overview

This is semi‑skilled and skilled work on City streets and expressways. An employee in this class works alone during evening or nighttime hours and on weekends, primarily keeping City streets and expressways free of hazards to vehicular traffic. The work is performed under general supervision on routine or repetitive assignments, with direct supervision received on special or unusual assignments. The tasks may require heavy physical exertion and can be performed under adverse weather conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Operate a pick‑up truck loaded with tools such as axe, spud bar, saws, wrenches, lights, and barricades.
  • Drive on City streets and expressways, removing any hazards to vehicular traffic.
  • Maintain two‑way radio contact with the Sewer Maintenance dispatcher while traveling in vehicle.
  • Respond promptly to traffic emergencies or hazards, including open construction sites, structural fires, neighborhood police activity, vehicular accidents, and slippery road conditions.
  • Set up or adjust barricades and flashing lights at scenes of emergencies or hazardous conditions.
  • Secure open manholes or vandalized construction sites.
  • Operate front‑end loader to load materials into trucks, and operate dump truck hauling materials such as sand, salt, and cinders.
  • Spread materials over ice, oil, or fuel hazards using a salt spreader and plow attachments for snow removal and ice control.
  • Receive and respond to work orders and instructions via email, performing related duties as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of work activity.
  • Make independent decisions about time, materials, and equipment usage.
  • Utilize motor vehicles and moderately complex highway maintenance automotive equipment.
  • List of essential job functions available upon request.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of one year of paid experience at the semi‑skilled laborer level in highway maintenance operations.
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio Class B commercial driver’s license with no air brake restriction.
  • Knowledge of the placement of lights and barricades on City streets and highways.
  • Knowledge of the various tools and equipment used for maintenance and emergency purposes.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to use email for receiving, responding to, and forwarding work orders and related correspondence.
  • Ability to function effectively under emergency or heavy traffic conditions.
  • Ability to make independent decisions regarding time, materials, and equipment usage.
  • Skill in operating motor vehicles and moderately complex highway maintenance automotive equipment.
  • Driver license conditional acceptance: applicants with a valid driver’s license from another state must obtain an Ohio driver’s license prior to appointment; those with six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified.
