Sweeper Maintenance Worker - Equipment Operator II

This is specialized semi‑skilled work changing and assembling brooms and operating moderately complex automotive equipment in street cleaning, snow removal, and ice control.

Employees are responsible for changing and assembling various brooms on street sweepers, operating heavy equipment that requires specialized skill in manipulating controls and attachments, and maneuvering safely and efficiently for special‑purpose operation. When not changing brooms or operating equipment, employees participate in or lead a work crew.

Work is performed under close supervision on special or unusual assignments and under general supervision on routine or repetitive assignments, with an opportunity for independent judgment in completing assignments.

Employees will work different shifts throughout the year and may be required to work overtime when needed.

• Routinely check wear on sweeper brooms and remove and reattach main and side brooms to sweepers with bolts.
• Wash and grease sweepers; inspect for mechanical issues and deliver units to the Motor Equipment Division for repair as needed.
• Deliver supplies and replacement brooms to sweepers in the field.
• Operate dump truck, salt spreader, truck with plow attachment (during snow and ice control season), front‑end loader, and large packer truck for leaf removal operations.
• Complete and submit required paperwork (pre‑trip/post‑trip inspection forms, logs, leave requests, emergency contact information, etc.).
• Perform related duties as required.

• Minimum of one year of paid semi‑skilled laboring experience.
• Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and a valid State of Ohio Class B commercial driver’s license (without an air‑brake restriction) obtained within 120 days of employment.
• Knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment, and procedures used to change and assemble street sweeper brooms.
• Knowledge of and skill in the safe operation of automotive and heavy equipment commonly assigned to this level.
• Knowledge of component parts, performance limits, and preventive maintenance needed to keep equipment in satisfactory operation.
• Knowledge of traffic laws of the State of Ohio and the City of Akron.
• Ability to use and care for broom tools and equipment, perform a variety of laboring tasks, understand and follow verbal and written instructions, rules, and guidelines.
• Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions, lead work‑crew activity, and safely operate motor vehicles and construction equipment.
