Definition
This is semi-skilled and skilled work on City streets and expressways.
An employee in this class works alone during evening or night-time hours and on weekends, primarily keeping City streets and expressways free of hazards to vehicular traffic.
Works under general supervision on routine or repetitive assignments. Direct supervision is received on special or unusual assignments. Work, at times, may require heavy physical exertion and may be performed under adverse weather conditions.
Characteristic Work- Operates a pick‑up truck loaded with various tools such as an axe, spud bar, saws, wrenches, lights and barricades.
- Drives on City streets and expressways to remove hazards to vehicular traffic.
- Maintains two‑way radio contact with the Sewer Maintenance dispatcher when traveling in vehicle.
- Responds promptly to traffic emergencies or hazards such as open construction sites, structural fires, neighborhood police activity, vehicular accidents, and slippery road conditions.
- Sets up or adjusts barricades and flashing lights at scenes of emergencies or hazardous conditions.
- Secures open manholes or vandalized construction sites.
- Operates a front‑end loader to load materials into trucks.
- Operates a dump truck hauling materials such as sand, salt, and cinders.
- Spreads materials over ice, oil, or fuel hazards.
- Operates heavy trucks with a salt spreader and plow attachments for snow removal and ice control.
- Receives and responds to work orders and instructions via email.
- Performs related work as required.
- A minimum of one year of paid experience at the semi‑skilled laborer level in highway maintenance operations.
- Possession of a valid State of Ohio Class B commercial driver’s license with no air‑brake restriction.
- Knowledge of the use and placement of lights and barricades on City streets and highways.
- Knowledge of the various tools and equipment used for maintenance and emergency purposes on City streets and highways.
- Ability to read, write, and understand written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to utilize email to receive, respond to, and forward work orders and related correspondence.
- Ability to keep accurate records of work activity.
- Ability to function effectively under emergency or heavy traffic conditions.
- Ability to make independent decisions about time, materials, and equipment usage.
- Skill in the operation and use of motor vehicles and moderately complex highway maintenance automotive equipment.

This is a classified position. The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for experience. A passing score on the examination is required for credit, with the examination weighted at 90% and experience at 10%. Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and appointment.
