Substitutes for ESS Rec Attendants and ESS Program Aides

The Extended School Services (ESS) Program serves students in the La Mesa‑Spring Valley School District both before and after school. The District is currently recruiting Substitutes for ESS Rec Attendants and ESS Program Aides. Both positions are approximately 2.0‑2.5 hours in the morning; generally between 6:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and 3.0‑3.5 hours in the afternoon; generally between 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Under the direction of the ESS Site Lead, Substitute ESS Rec Attendants and Program Aides observe and manage behavior of students enrolled in ESS during recreational activities, monitor the play area when students are present, organize and direct age‑appropriate activities for school‑age students, and assist in maintaining a clean and safe learning environment for students. In addition, Substitute Program Aides coordinate and plan activities and support students’ educational needs.

ALL OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT ARE CONTINGENT ON PRE‑EMPLOYMENT CLEARANCES FOR:
Department of Justice (CA) Fingerprints;
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Fingerprints and Tuberculosis (TB).
NOTE:
The District pays for Pre‑Employment clearances for Substitute Employees.

Responsibilities
  • Assists students to organize and find appropriate play activities within a positive and encouraging environment.
  • Distributes crafts and/or play material; provides required supplies.
  • Implements school and ESS discipline policy and follows up with appropriate personnel to convey and/or receive information required to perform job functions.
  • Maintains program equipment and work areas; ensures availability of items and/or provides a safe learning and recreational environment.
  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings and provides a safe and positive environment.
  • Organizes quiet or active, age‑appropriate indoor and/or outdoor activities.
  • Oversees students moving about the campus; ensures the safety of students and meets the District and program requirements.
  • Promotes appropriate student behavior and good habits through implementation of a discipline plan to improve the quality of students’ outcomes and encourage student development.
  • Responds to inquiries to resolve issues; provides information and/or direction to others.
  • Serves nutritious snacks; ensures students receive proper nutritional items to meet federal and state guidelines.
  • Transfers children directly from/to parents or designee; ensures safety of students and meets the District and program requirements.
  • Assists with the implementation of instructional programs, lesson plans, and enrichment activities.
  • Assists with the planning of learning and/or age‑appropriate activities; presents and/or reinforces learning concepts.
  • Coordinates and/or oversees individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings; provides a safe and positive learning and recreational environment.
  • Develops and implements craft activities.
Qualifications
  • 16 years old and experience working with children.
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED and experience working with children.
  • Complete at least 48 units at an institution of higher education.
  • Obtained an associate’s or higher degree (college level).
  • Met (pass) the District‑administered ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) assessment.
Knowledge of
  • Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Safe and age‑appropriate activities.
  • Stages of child development.
Additional Knowledge for Program Aide
  • Basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios.
  • Basic record‑keeping methods and procedures.
  • Behavior management and motivation techniques.
  • First Aid and CPR (or willingness to complete certification through District‑sponsored program).
  • Health and safety practices and procedures.
  • Operating standard office equipment, including pertinent software applications.
  • Safety practices.
  • Written procedures, routine documents, and clear verbal communication.
