Description

Summary:

This is a Federally Funded Title III position under HBCU2 activity, Enhancing Student Engagement, Retention, and Persistence at Alabama A&M University. The overall goal of this activity is to strengthen and grow the University by creating strategic academic investments and enhancing the academic and co-curricular experience to meet the changing educational needs of students. This initiative perfectly aligns with the University's Strategic Priority 1, Goal 1 which is to strengthen and grow the university by creating strategic academic investments and enhancing the academic and co-curricular experience to meet the changing educational needs of students.

Under the general supervision of the Director for Freshman Academy and College Associate Dean, this role provides intrusive academic advising and registration for incoming freshmen students. This role makes recommendations and referrals to students for tutorial assistance, supplemental assistance, and meetings with faculty members and faculty advisors. Teaches First Year Experience (FYE) classes. This person will report to the Director of the Freshman Academy.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serves as a member of the University-wide Academic Advising Council.
  • Serve as Advisor/Mentor to students from entry to the university until they earn and/or transfer enough hours to total 31 or more.
  • Conduct pre-registration advising sessions for new freshmen students.
  • Teach the First Year Experience, ORI 101 course in the fall and spring terms.
  • Tracks student participation in ORI 101 and 102 courses, and reports of advising activities.
  • Maintain a cooperative and collaborative relationship with academic departments and all student affairs components responsible for student services.
  • Meet with students periodically to discuss areas of difficulty and progress.
  • Monitor students' academic progress weekly using Banner, Blackboard, Navigate, Degree Works and other modes of communication and Student Success Management System.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on all students assigned to individual advisor.
  • Assist students with the completion of school related academic documents, for example, drop/add, change of major, transient and visiting student forms, etc.
  • Develop and present workshops on advising related issues.
  • Engage in research and follow-up activities to evaluate the advising component.
  • Provide guidance in career exploration for undecided majors.
  • Attends professional development to remain abreast of trends and new approaches to advising.
  • Participates in and attends all college-wide meetings and department meetings to be up to date on any curriculum modifications and changes, opportunities for internship opportunities, on-campus research experiences, and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Serves on Department, College, and University committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Minimum

Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.):
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • One or more years of successful advising/counseling and/or teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Computer literacy in use of Microsoft Office Suite, Banner, Blackboard, Zoom, Navigate, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work with students, faculty and staff while maintaining a professional demeanor
  • Ability to execute the ORI 101and 102 course curricula as outlined by the syllabus
  • Ability to administer, interpret and provide added insights in the use of various advising, career and retention assessments
  • Ability to work under possible adverse circumstances
