Position Summary: The duties of the Library Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA) under the supervision of the faculty and/or staff may include assisting faculty and staff, other academic support duties, departmental operational needs, and other associated clerical duties as assigned. Positions will be filled based on individual applicant’s skills, qualification, and departmental needs. If applying as a graduate student at JSU, transcripts and letters of recommendation will be reviewed by personnel from the units posting the assistantship position.
Compensation: Graduate Administrative Assistants are expected to work 20 hours per week during a fall or spring semester, or a full summer term (May, June, July). Hourly rate: $8.25 per hour, with a maximum of 20 hours per week for a total of 16 weeks. Student pay is disbursed biweekly based on hours worked; students must clock in and out for each shift.
In addition to the hourly rate, Graduate Assistantships carry a scholarship each semester up to a maximum award of $4,386.00, covering general university fee and tuition; students are responsible for additional fees such as international, program, and course fees. Students in specialty priced programs may owe a remaining balance after scholarship award.
- Performs a combination of duties under the supervision of the faculty and/or staff.
- Performs clerical and other duties as assigned.
- Additional duties as required by the department.
- Must be classified as a degree‑seeking graduate student at JSU.
- Must be actively enrolled in a graduate degree program at JSU during the assistantship semester.
- If a new student, must be admitted to a degree program.
- Must be actively enrolled in required coursework towards the degree; the Graduate Assistantship will not pay for courses not in the degree program plan of study/checklist.
- Must hold the minimum required GPA for the student’s enrolled degree program.
- During the assistantship semester, must be enrolled at JSU in six to nine (6‑9) graduate semester hours in a fall or spring semester or six to nine (6‑9) graduate semester hours in a full summer term. Exceptions may be made by the Director of Graduate Studies under certain circumstances (e.g., required undergraduate courses, fewer than six hours due to progression, or concurrent teaching assistantship).
- Must not be holding another campus job.
- A graduate assistant cannot receive tuition scholarships or waivers from the University; scholarships from external sources and JST employee benefit of tuition assistance are permitted.
- If the student has previously held a Graduate Assistantship at JSU, must have fulfilled all duties and complied with all policies to be considered again.
- Preferred that a Graduate Teaching Assistant does not teach and take a class during the same summer term; permission must be granted by advisor and Director of Graduate Studies if enrolling in a class.
- Student responsible for determining any impact of the tuition scholarship on eligibility for federal financial aid.
- Must complete FERPA training, Sexual Harassment training, and other required JSU trainings.
- International graduate assistants must be certified by the Director of the International House and Programs.
