SummaryThe ELA Teacher plans and delivers high-quality, rigorous instruction that fosters the intellectual, social, and emotional development of every student. The educator will implement evidence-based literacy practices to ensure all students are on a track for college and career readiness. This role requires modeling independent thinking, abstract reasoning, and creative problem-solving while maintaining a safe, inclusive, and technology-integrated environment.
I.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Instructional Excellence: Teaches subject area according to curriculum guidelines based on Maryland State Frameworks and College and Career Ready Standards.
- Evidence-Based Literacy: Utilizes best practices (aligned with the Science of Reading where applicable) for teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening, and literary analysis.
- Targeted Intervention: Collaborates with administration and the Secondary English/Literacy Supervisor to identify and support students in need of targeted reading intervention.
- Data-Driven Planning: Tracks ongoing student progress using district-prescribed tools. Incorporates formative and summative assessment results into daily and long-term planning.
- Inclusive Environment: Develops equitable rules for classroom behavior and maintains a safe, consistent, and fair learning environment.
- Professional
Collaboration:
Participates in school management, shares responsibility for the total school program, and supervises instructional assistants or volunteers. - Communication: Reports student progress objectively to parents and students; facilitates conflict resolution with professionalism and empathy.
- Technology Integration: Integrates modern technology, including interactive displays and digital literacy tools, into daily lessons in alignment with Maryland Student Technology Standards.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) from an accredited four-year college or university in an applicable field of education.
- Certification: Must meet Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Secondary English (Grades 7-12).
- Language
Skills:
Ability to analyze professional journals, technical procedures, and complex literary texts. Ability to write detailed lesson plans and present information effectively to diverse audiences. - Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and handle variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
- Computer
Skills:
Proficiency in Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Internet software. Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and student information systems. Prior experience operating Promethean or Smart Boards is preferred. Awareness of ethical AI use in the classroom and digital citizenship.
- Physical Demands: Regularly required to talk and hear. Frequently required to stand, walk, and use hands for instructional tools. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision.
- Work Environment: The noise level is usually moderate. The educator must be able to maintain focus and safety in a dynamic classroom setting with moving mechanical parts (e.g., standard office/classroom equipment).
- Dependability: Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent; arrives to class and meetings on time.

Position Type: Full-Time
Salary: $52,018 to $96,181 Per Year
