Title:

School Counselor Immediate Supervisor:
School Principal

Minimum Qualifications:

Meet all state certification requirements for School Counselor.

Morgan County Schools prefers candidates with the following:

  • Masters in school counseling
  • 3 or more years of classroom experience

Skills and Abilities:

  • Understands basic technology and has the ability to learn new computer programs
  • Possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Possesses strong organization and time management skills
  • Essential Functions:

  • Develops and delivers school counseling curriculum using the Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance State Model for AL Public Schools.
  • Assists students in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development
  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, and parents to better understand and meet the needs of all students
  • Provides individual and small group counseling as needed
  • Makes appropriate referrals (as mandatory reporters) of students and parents to outside agencies and specialists when necessary
  • Advocates for students' rights in all situations
  • Continually plans, evaluates, and revises the school counseling program
  • Pursues continuous professional development and growth as developed in the yearly Professional Learning Plan.
  • Promotes an understanding and appreciation for diverse populations
  • Develops, reviews, and revises a career and educational plan for each student
  • Prepares students for transition to the next level
  • Organizes and implements the administration of state and/or nationally required standardized tests. Analyze and interpret test results to provide information about educational, career, and person/social needs.
  • Participates in school decision making and in activities which contribute to the effectiveness of the school
  • Cooperates and collaborates with other professionals in enhancing the education of students. Communicates with administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and students as to the role of the school counselor in the overall educational process.
  • Other Attributes:

  • Adheres to the ethical standards of state and national school counselor associations
  • Adheres to best practices prescribed by state and national school counselor associations
  • Demonstrates knowledge of local, state, and federal policies and laws pertaining to school counseling
  • Demonstrates and maintains confidential behavior in all situations
  • Evaluation:

    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
