Workforce Development Non-Credit Adjunct Instructor - Welding

Posting

Summary:

This part‑time, contract position is offered on a course‑by‑course basis, up to 1,500 contracted hours per year. The instructor will design, deliver, and assess welding coursework for non‑credit learners at the James City County Trades Center in Toano, VA, with additional opportunities at the Hampton campus. Teaching may include day, evening, weekend, distance, and hybrid modalities.

Special Assignments:
May be required to perform other duties as assigned, including assistance during emergency declarations by the Governor.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience as a welder (no teaching experience required).

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Welding fillet welds in all positions using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW processes.
  • Groove welds with backing plate using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW.
  • Groove welds without backing plate using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW.
  • Open‑root pipe using SMAW and GTAW.
  • Setup and operation of oxy‑acetylene welding and cutting, and plasma cutting equipment.
  • Weld joint geometry and terminology; basic welding drawings and symbols.

Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer‑service orientation.
  • Basic computer literacy.

Abilities:

  • Apply welding theories to practice.
  • Assess learner performance and provide feedback.
  • Measure and align learner outcomes.
  • Serve traditional and non‑traditional students.
  • Plan, organize, and maximize student learning.
  • Manage a 10‑student class (live work, lectures, labs).
  • Promote higher‑order thinking and problem solving.
  • Adhere to educational quality standards and maintain records.
  • Apply to state requirements, local needs, and national trends.
  • Use Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Additional Considerations:

  • AWS Welder Certifications in SMAW/GTAW pipe.
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • Prior teaching or training experience in a workplace or community/technical college.

Additional Job Features:

  • Operation of a state vehicle – no required travel beyond minimal.
  • No supervisory responsibility.
