Position Overview
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Trinity University is hiring an Assistant Professor of Sociology with an open specialty. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East, or Indigenous Peoples and Native Nations. The subject area is open, with a particular interest in scholars with expertise in border studies, diaspora studies, education, immigration, spatial analysis, or urban studies.
Candidates should have prior experience teaching at the undergraduate level, preferably having directed solo‑taught courses. The successful applicant will be expected to teach lower‑division courses such as Introduction to Sociology and to develop upper‑division courses in their chosen specialization.
Trinity University is a secular, independent, private institution founded in 1869. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is an interdisciplinary unit with eleven faculty members, offering majors and minors in Sociology and Anthropology, and contributes to programs across campus such as Environmental Studies, International Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and Urban Studies. It values academic freedom, inclusivity, and community‑engaged research.
- Teaching: Undergraduate instructional duties include required foundational courses and specialty courses. Participation in the First‑Year Experience program is highly encouraged. The teaching load is 3‑2 with class sizes of approximately 12–24 students.
- Research: Maintain a consistent and productive scholarly agenda, including original research, conference participation, and publication of peer‑reviewed work.
- Service: Advise majors, and provide service to the department, university, profession, and community.
This is a tenure‑track, nine‑month appointment beginning in August 2027 with a standard probationary period. The position offers a strong faculty development environment focused on teaching excellence, scholarly impact, and community engagement.
QualificationsEducation: Ph.D. in Sociology (or equivalent) awarded before August 1, 2027.
Experience: Proven experience teaching undergraduate coursework, including at least one solo‑taught course.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level; published peer‑reviewed scholarship; robust methodological foundation and engagement with sociological theory; commitment to Trinity University’s liberal arts mission and its value of intentional inclusion; ability to contribute to Trinity’s interdisciplinary programs.
