Process Engineering Assistant
Georgia Pacific has an immediate opening for a Process Engineering Assistant at the Naheola Mill in Pennington, AL. This role supports environmental compliance and regulatory reporting in partnership with a team of Process Engineering Assistants.
Salary: $29.63 per hour.
Schedule:
5:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., with flexibility for overtime and occasional weekend work.
- Compliance testing – BOD, TSS, DO, COD, pH
- Quality assurance procedures per ADEM and EPA standards
- Preparation of compliance reports for ADEM
- Sludge press and groundwater monitoring and testing
- River DO surveys and boat operation
- Maintenance of lab equipment, boat, truck, and monitoring gear
- Data entry of quality, process, and test results
- Assist in training other personnel
- Monitor process trends for environmental compliance
- Identify, troubleshoot, and communicate out‑of‑control areas
- Perform special testing (e.g., excessive fiber/chemical sewer loss, trials)
- Conduct periodic environmental inspections within the mill
- Maintain Title V records per permit requirements
- Maintain laboratory filing system
- Collect and transport samples from operating areas to laboratory and destinations
- Operate process sample lines and understand sampler mechanics, valves, and cleaning procedures
- Provide support to other Process Engineering Assistants and Environmental Engineers as needed
- Apply environmental regulatory framework
- Perform additional duties as required
- Associate degree in a science discipline or one or more of the following professional certifications:
National Association of Environmental Professionals, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Safety Professional, Occupational Health and Safety Technician, or Professional Engineer. - Experience in a laboratory environment and operation of lab equipment.
- Experience performing standard laboratory analytical techniques.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and PI application.
- Current vessel operating license or ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
- Ability to work extended hours and on weekends when required.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, or related discipline.
- Lab experience in a paper mill or chemical company.
- Experience performing statistical process control (control charting and entering compliance data).
