Job Functions:
The Melt and Cast Metallurgist is the primary technical resource for Electric Arc Furnace process optimization and steelmaking practices. This position works closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering to improve furnace productivity, energy efficiency, refractory performance, and steel quality through data-driven process improvements and sound metallurgical practices.
- Providing day-to-day technical support for melt shop Electric Arc Furnace operations.
- Developing and implementing Electric Arc Furnace operating practices, including optimization of power input, burner profiles, oxygen practices, and furnace chemistry.
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives related to steelmaking and EAF processes.
- Monitoring and improving process consistency, steel cleanliness, and product quality.
- Partnering with operations, maintenance, quality, and engineering teams to solve technical and production challenges.
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Minimum Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated experience optimizing Electric Arc Furnace power profiles, burner practices, and oxygen injection.
- Experience evaluating production data and implementing process changes that improve tap-to-tap time, electrical efficiency, refractory campaign life, and overall furnace performance.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root cause investigation skills.
- Experience developing technical training and mentoring teammates.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in electric arc furnace metallurgy.
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
