Job Description & How to Apply Below
Description
Oxy Cutting Station Operator (often called an Oxy-Fuel Cutter or Burner) uses a combination of fuel gases and oxygen to preheat and thermally slice ferrous metals like carbon steel. The operator runs and maintains a dedicated workstation to process, cut, or scrap metal according to production or demolition.
Responsibilities- Equipment Setup: Connect, adjust, and inspect gas regulators, hoses, and cutting torches. Select appropriate nozzle tips and set the correct PSI for the material thickness.
- Material Preparation: Safely secure raw steel plates, beams, or oversized scrap metal in the cutting area.
- Thermal Cutting: Heat the metal to its ignition temperature (about 1,800°F) and engage the oxygen jet to oxidize and blow away the molten slag, creating a clean cut or bevel.
- Safety & Maintenance: Strictly follow industrial "Hot Work" safety protocols. Inspect hoses for leaks, and maintain a clean and hazard-free work space.
- Proven ability or willingness to operate oxy-fuel cutting equipment, including torches, regulators, and hoses.
- Strong understanding of thermal cutting processes and techniques for cutting or beveling carbon steel.
- Experience setting up equipment, including selecting proper nozzle tips and adjusting gas pressures for material thickness.
- Ability to safely handle, position, and secure heavy steel materials such as plates, beams, and scrap metal.
- Knowledge of inspecting and maintaining equipment, including identifying leaks or worn components.
- Commitment to following all “Hot Work” safety procedures and industrial safety standards.
- Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate and clean cuts according to job specifications.
- Previous experience in metal fabrication, demolition, or scrap processing.
- OSHA training or hot work certification.
- Ability to work in an industrial environment with exposure to heat, noise, and heavy equipment.
