The National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) is seeking an experienced Communications Director to develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive communications strategy that advances NCAC’s mission, visibility, and impact. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a compassionate, highly innovative, self‑motivated, and self‑disciplined professional who is passionate about supporting the NCAC’s mission to champion and strengthen the global response to child abuse.
Aboutthe Role
As a member of our team in Huntsville, AL, you will serve as the organization’s communications strategist and practitioner and be accountable for brand stewardship, media relations, crisis communications, public affairs, marketing, and digital engagement. You will ensure that all communications are aligned, accurate, and effectively convey the organization’s work, particularly in areas involving complex and sensitive subject matter. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with executive leadership, all NCAC departments, and external partners (local, national, and international) to strengthen public trust, increase awareness, and position the organization as a national leader in its field.
TypicalDay
- Advising executives on messaging and communications strategy
- Creating press releases, talking points, speeches, and stakeholder communications
- Responding to media inquiries and cultivating media relationships
- Monitoring emerging issues and leading communications responses
- Reviewing website, social media, and marketing content for consistency and impact
- Analyzing campaign performance and identifying new opportunities to increase visibility and engagement
- Advising executive leadership on emerging issues
- Preparing and coaching subject matter experts for media interactions
- Supporting the development of marketing materials for various departments
- Meeting with media representatives, partners, and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and increase awareness of the organization's mission
- Providing strategic guidance on risk mitigation
- Other duties as assigned
- Possess exceptional writing, editing, and public speaking skills
- Are a proven communications strategist with crisis communications expertise
- Manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy
- Lead with a creative, adaptable, and solutions‑oriented approach
- Demonstrate the ability to think strategically and execute effectively in a fast‑paced environment
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams
- Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines under pressure
- Exercise sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism when handling sensitive topics
- Demonstrate technical proficiency in CRM systems (e.g., Donor Perfect), design tools (Canva/Adobe), and digital collaboration platforms
- Possess extensive knowledge of/experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Constant Contact

- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field required (Master’s preferred)
- Minimum of five years of professional experience serving as a practitioner and leading teams in communications, public relations, public affairs, or a related field
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in a senior leadership role
- Experience developing marketing materials
- Expertise in crisis communications and issues management
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience in a nonprofit, public‑sector, or mission‑driven organization
- Experience working with sensitive or complex subject matter
- Previous experience supporting executive leadership or boards
- Experience managing communications teams and cross‑functional initiatives
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license
- Professional Certification (APR, CMP, or SCMP) is preferred
The NCAC main campus is located in downtown Huntsville, AL. Our standard business hours are 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday. This position will work on‑site approximately 40 hours per week with occasional non‑standard evening and weekend hours as needed. Occasional travel and a flexible schedule may be required.
