The City of Cordova Ameri Corps Environmental Stewardship Program will engage Ameri Corps members in hands‑on environmental stewardship, park improvement, and community service activities that enhance public spaces and strengthen the City's capacity to maintain and improve its natural and recreational resources. Members will serve throughout Cordova's park and recreation system, including Indian Head Mill Park, Disney Lake Park, Reservoir Park, South Circle, and other community properties.
Service activities will include trail and park maintenance, litter and debris removal, beautification, vegetation management, invasive species control, erosion and stormwater‑related projects, habitat and natural‑resource improvements, facility and grounds maintenance, and preparation and support for community recreation and environmental education activities. The program is designed to address a significant local capacity need. Cordova has invested substantially in parks, outdoor recreation, environmental improvements, and community revitalization, but limited municipal staffing makes it difficult to provide the level of stewardship necessary to sustain these assets.
Ameri Corps members will provide dedicated service capacity while completing visible projects that improve the safety, appearance, accessibility, and environmental quality of public spaces. Members will receive structured orientation, safety training, environmental stewardship education, and ongoing supervision. The program will also provide members with practical experience in public service, teamwork, leadership, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Through Ameri Corps service, Cordova will create a sustainable model that combines environmental stewardship with community improvement, strengthens the City's park and recreation system, expands local service capacity, and develops individuals who understand the value of civic service and responsible stewardship of community resources.
