Position Title
Postdoc Research Associate - Artificial Intelligence Institute for Resilient Agriculture
Appointment TypePost Doc/Trainee
Job Description Summary of Duties and ResponsibilitiesWe seek a Postdoctoral Scholar to develop next-generation crop canopy modeling tools that combine mechanistic plant physiology with machine learning for digital and precision agriculture. The work emphasizes coupled canopy processes (radiation, microclimate, photosynthesis, transpiration) and integration with crop modeling platforms and decision-relevant simulations. The scholar will use field and physiological observations for calibration, uncertainty quantification, and validation. The role includes developing robust, reusable software pipelines and collaborating across engineering, plant science, and agronomy.
Expected outputs include peer-reviewed publications, proposal contributions, and mentoring.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field, with a strong focus on AI and Machine Learning.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with process-based leaf/canopy carbon/water/energy flux modeling and leaf-to-canopy scaling.
- Experience with the coupling of physiology modules with crop models (e.g., DSSAT/APSIM) and reproducible calibration/benchmark workflows.
- Experience with canopy radiation/microclimate modeling and/or 3D canopy/FSPM or ray tracing.
- Experience with data assimilation/UQ for parameter inference (EnKF/Bayesian/ensemble methods) using flux or gas-exchange datasets.
- Strong Python (plus MATLAB/Fortran/C++ a bonus), Git-based software practices; HPC/ensemble computing experience.
- Demonstrated strong publication record and experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as mentoring skills.
The AI Institute for Resilient Agriculture will transform agriculture by developing a new AI-driven framework for modeling plants across agronomically relevant scales. We accomplish this by introducing AI-driven digital twins that fuse diverse data with siloed domain knowledge.
