To assist the Bakery/Deli Department to achieve maximum sales and profit while maintaining optimum store conditions.
SignificantJob Responsibilities
- Help create an environment where customers feel welcomed and appreciated by answering all product‑related questions.
- Assist and/or make recommendations regarding hiring, firing, discipline, promotion, and evaluation of all Bakery/Deli Department personnel.
- Assist in orienting and training new Bakery/Deli Department employees and retraining employees when necessary.
- Assist in developing a weekly labor schedule for the department for approval by the store manager.
- Accurately record customers’ order/requests for cakes and other bakery/deli items.
- Assist in implementing the weekly display plan for display/table/case merchandising and ad promotion.
- Assist in ordering all bakery/deli products and supplies from authorized vendors to minimize out‑of‑stocks while maintaining desired production turns.
- Process customer purchases quickly and accurately by operating an electronic cash register, scanner, and scale.
- Assist in maintaining the perishable department communication board with weekly updates and follow guidelines posted for the sampling program and intercom announcements.
- Supervise and perform baking of products: breads, rolls, buns, cakes, pies, pastries, brownies.
- Supervise and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, verify the merchandise against the invoice, inspect delivery for shortages/damage and quality, sort cases for stocking or product preparation, and code‑date all case items in the cooler/freezer.
- Supervise transportation of product to the sales floor/cooler/freezer/product preparation area.
- Supervise safety procedures used in the operation of the baler, case cutter, pallet jack, knife, intercom, pricing gun, slicer, fryer, ovens, proofer, steam table, stove, scales and wrapper (must be 18years or older to operate the pallet jack, baler, slicer, fryer, steam table).
- Communicate with the Deli Manager on problems, recommendations for change, effectiveness of plans and merchandising decisions.
- Supervise the checking of case and cooler temperatures 4 times daily.
- Supervise the preparation, display and packaging of all products in the bakery/deli department.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by the Deli Manager, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers.
Required:
- Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
- Ability to give/receive complex verbal and written instructions to/from supervisors, co‑workers, and employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
- Work and educational history demonstrating stability.
- Basic reading and writing ability in English; able to read instructions, merchandise labels, order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
Preferred:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior Bakery/Deli Department experience.
- Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, cleaning/sanitation equipment, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, knife, slicer, scales, cash register, steam table, wrapper, fryer and stove (must be 18years or older to operate pallet jack, baler, slicer, steam table and fryer).
- Prior supervisory experience.
- Mobility:
Move while conducting training and orientation of Bakery/Deli Department personnel (~25 yards). - Supervise/perform receiving of product, movement to the floor or storage area, opening/cutting of cases, inspect product quality, sorting of cases/merchandise, building of displays in the aisle and on the case/rack, allocation of space in bakery/deli categories.
