Job Summary And Essential Job Functions

Under general direction and within guidelines set by policies, rules, and regulations, this position is responsible for operating tractors and light equipment used in public works. The Right Of Way Equipment Operator may be required to perform labor duties and supervise other employees as assigned, and may be required to assist in other areas within Public Works.

Essential Job Functions

• Operates tractors used in maintenance of city right of ways.
• Operates all equipment in lower classifications.
• Maintains and cleans streets and gutters.
• Supervises any assigned employees and ensures that crews are working in a safe and efficient manner.
• Inspects equipment prior to use.
• Services equipment (including washing and greasing) and makes minor field adjustments and repairs; reports all mechanical issues, which might need maintenance and/or repair to superintendent.
• Performs other reasonably duties in a safe manner as assigned by immediate supervisor or other supervisors as required.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent with experience in the operation of tractors, weed eaters, chainsaws and related equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

• Must possess and maintain a current valid Class B Commercial driver's license within 6 months and have an acceptable driving record.
• Must maintain regular attendance on the job.
• Must be able to work on call and overtime as necessary.
• Possession of a valid, State of Alabama driver's license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.

Skills and Abilities

:

• Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in the operation of motor vehicles.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions in equipment operation.
• Knowledge of the geography of the City, including the locations of streets or the ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly.
• Knowledge of City ordinances, policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs).
• Skill in planning and organizing work.
• Skill in utilizing such office equipment as a calculator, typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.
• Skill in interpersonal relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
• Skill in verbal and written communication.
• Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
• Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
• Ability to operate tractors safely and in accordance with applicable traffic laws and regulations.
• Ability to make minor adjustments and repairs and provide service to equipment.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to work, year round, in all types of weather.
• Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the public.

Physical Demands:

The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

• Balancing:
  Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
• Climbing:
  Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
• Crawling:
  Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
• Crouching:
  Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
