Job Goals:

  • To provide support services to schools, students and their families in order to resolve personal, emotional, academic and social problems as students transition between alternative schools, court-ordered placements, and non-traditional settings.
  • To assist school personnel and families of adjudicated students in maintaining continuity of learning and educational progress while student legal or behavioral issues are being resolved.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma;
    Bachelor's degree in social work or related field preferred.
  • Previous experience with law enforcement, public schools, social work, preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. .
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to develop, evaluate and implement student assistance programs.
  • Ability to collaborate with other school system personnel and partners.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and high standards of performance.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
  • Performance Responsibilities and

    Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • Serves as a student advocate and as a liaison between the home, school, and community.
  • Provides intervention services for students and families with interpersonal and environmental difficulties.
  • Assists in the referral process of students and/or parents to appropriate community agencies and follow-up as necessary.
  • Provides consultation and collaborative services to teachers, principals, counselors, and other school personnel.
  • Makes home, school, and community visits, as needed to monitor and report student adjustment and progress.
  • Helps identify and provide services to students in need of transition services.
  • Prepares and maintains professional documentation, including assessment results and intervention logs.
  • Maintains accurate communication between students, families, courts, juvenile facilities, alternative schools, regular schools, teachers, counselors, social workers, and administrators to ensure successful transitions for students from one setting to another.
  • Models and maintains high ethical standards.
  • Assists school personnel in assessing students' social and environmental needs.
  • Coordinates and develops specialized services for students, parents, and families.
  • Develops and implements plans to enhance students' school success.
  • Assists school personnel in understanding better how facts such as family, culture, socioeconomic status, and physical and mental health can affect students' performance.
  • Develops a rapport with students and acts as a mentor when appropriate through individual and small group contact.
  • Assists with crisis prevention and intervention as needed.
  • As a part of the education team, helps students to improve their attendance, cope with crisis situations, develop self-discipline, build self-esteem, enhance problem-solving and decision-making skills, take advantage of educational opportunities, and learn to resolve conflicts without violence.
  • As a result of working with students, schools, and communities, supports parents and families to actively participate in their child's education, use school and community resources more effectively, and identity and meet their child's emotional and social needs.
  • Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Provides counseling to individual students at assigned schools having emotional, social, behavioral, or attendance problems.
  • Serves as a member of assessment and support teams with the school.
  • Demonstrates appropriate organizational and time management skills.
  • Supervises and evaluates staff assigned in accordance with school system procedures and schedules.
  • Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Works cooperatively and productively with the Superintendent and other administrative staff to ensure the system's vision, goals and strategies are implemented and providing all pertinent data to all appropriate personnel within the designated time frame.
