Bus Aide

Reports To: Supervisor of Transportation and School Principal

FLSA Designation: Non-exempt

Job Goal: To aid the bus driver as needed to safely transport students to and from school and other school related activities. Maintain a safe and clean environment, manage and discipline students, monitor vehicle performance and report mechanical issues as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver certificate
Possess and maintain a current Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). as required by BCBOE policy
Possess and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record including no DUI convictions
Provide successful drug screening results and be subject to, and pass, random drug and alcohol screenings or the Alabama School Bus Driver Examination Report once every two years.
Participation in pre-service and in-service bus driver training program.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Skills and Physical Abilities:

Physical dexterity, coordination, mobility, visual acuity and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching in order to safely assist special needs students.
Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force
Demonstrate the ability to work with school age children

Performance Responsibilities and

Essential Functions:

Ensure safety of students by:

Buckling them in their seats and securing wheelchairs before bus starts
Keeping students seated and under control during transportation
Assisting them with crossing the street, if necessary
Assisting them during loading and unloading, at home and at school
Escorting them to the responsible adult at school

Account for student’s personal belongings and messages.

Assist bus driver with keeping updated file of students assigned to bus.

Familiarize self with and use:

Assistance request forms
Safety equipment located on bus
Emergency procedures
Bus route and pickup points
Wheelchair lift and locking equipment

Maintain all communication equipment, follow state and board guidelines regarding equipment use.

Deal with emergency physical problems during loading, transporting and unloading.

Notify school officials of unusual events or behaviors.

Cooperate with school staff in special requests concerning handling behaviors, physical management, etc.

Contact and obtain acceptable substitute when unable to perform your duties.

Understand and assist in upholding system rules, policies and procedures.

Be regular and punctual in attendance, follow procedure for absences and leave.

Maintain proper and professional relationships with students and other employees.

Perform duties in a manner that will promote good public relations.

Assume other transportation related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Maintain highest level of security and confidentiality regarding any and all information gleaned in day-to-day activities regarding students and staff personally identifiable information, according to FERPA and Blount County Security Use guidelines as well as any and all state and federal laws and statutes.

Terms of Employment:

182-day position in accordance with attention to bus driver requirements for morning and afternoon routes.

Daily work schedule (routes) will be determined by the Supervisor of Transportation or his/her designee for the necessary operations of the school assigned. Work assignments and schedules are subject to change.

Salary:

Approved salary schedule for Bus Driver is located on the Human Resources webpage. to view salary schedules. Annual salary is based on a 40-hour week with daily full-time equivalent of 20 standard work hours.

Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the support personnel evaluation system and board policy.
