Job Summary: Solid Waste Driver is responsible for picking up, transporting and safe disposal of garbage and waste materials in a timely, scheduled manner. The driver is responsible for the supervision of Solid Waste Technicians, who ride on the back of garbage trucks, but will ride on the back of garbage trucks when necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities- Accepts responsibility for garbage truck and cargo at all times.
- Prepares appropriate reports as required.
- Supervises Solid Waste Technicians who ride on the garbage trucks.
- Maintains VCR (Vehicle Condition Report) in a responsible manner.
- Maintains fuel consumption, mileage, and maintenance records in a responsible manner.
- Provides timely response to route audit requests.
- Drives trucks, following established routes, through residential streets or alleys or through business or industrial areas.
- Provides for pick up and safe disposal of refuse and waste materials.
- Assures that route is completed in a timely, scheduled manner within a 40-hour workweek.
- Inspects truck prior to beginning routes to ensure safe operating condition.
- Maintains a clean interior and exterior of vehicle/equipment assignment.
- Assists with other routes as needed.
- Operates communication devices to receive instructions from dispatcher.
- Follows scheduled routes or makes authorized changes to pick up schedule as needed.
- Transports load to disposal area and assists in dumping truck when route is complete.
- Will ride (dismount and remount) on the back of the garbage trucks and dump garbage carts when required to complete routes.
Proficient in the operation of assigned vehicle; general knowledge of the problems involved in operating assigned automotive equipment; general knowledge of the geography of the county and the location of streets; general knowledge of traffic rules and regulations; skill in the safe operation of the automotive equipment to which assigned; possess skills to operate a communication device; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment;
ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to effectively communicate in a courteous manner; writing skills to clearly and neatly complete reports as needed.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class “B” minimum and be insurable by insurance standards.
Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, and holidays to complete work within specified period of time.
Physical RequirementsSee well enough to read, write and safely operate garbage truck;
Hear well enough to respond to verbal communications;
Constantly using vision and hearing when reading monitors, being aware of surroundings and listening to equipment, traffic and alarms.
Speak well enough to answer questions in a polite, courteous manner.
PPE is worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.
Body mobility to perform inspections and operate vehicle;
Body movement of mobility to bend, move, stand, and lift.
Use of hands and fingers to operate vehicle.
Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds.
Frequently standing to complete daily tasks, sitting when driving and operating vehicle, walking around vehicle, climbing onto equipment, and using foot controls to drive vehicle.
Occasionally kneeling, bending or crouching when monitoring vehicle, and balancing when mounting and dismounting.
Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme heat or extreme cold, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
