Job Description And Duties
Under the general direction of the Chief Counsel of the Office of the Director Legal Unit (OD‑Legal), and the Assistant Chief Counsels, Attorney III represent the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations, the Department, and division chiefs and managers in a wide and interesting variety of subject areas that are within the responsibility and jurisdiction of the Department. Attorney III generally have mid-level experience, and are expected to independently handle a caseload, to have solid lawyering skills, and to have some level of subject matter expertise in or more areas of the Department's responsibility.
Duties- Representing the Department, Director, or Administrative Director of the Division of Workers' Compensation in all Anti‑Fraud Unit matters, including but not limited to provider suspension and special lien adjudication matters
- Representing the Department, Director, or one of DIR's divisions in civil and writ litigation, including litigation involving constitutional issues
- Representing the Director of DIR in workers’ compensation cases involving special funds administered by the Director
- Analyzing and drafting proposed legislation
- Providing legal services with respect to contract matters involving the Department
- Drafting proposed regulations
- Providing legal services on a wide variety of other issues that may arise in the operation of the Department

Salary AdjustmentEffective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% and 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. This is a full‑time position headquartered in the Office of the Director, Anti‑Fraud Unit, located in an office environment in the 22‑story State office building at 1515 Clay Street, Oakland, California. The unit is currently located on the 7th floor.
Employees have their own offices, work at desks, and are required to work extensively on computers for drafting letters, briefs and other documents, research, email communication, file review, training and other purposes. Attorneys are expected to handle their own word processing, and secretarial support is generally limited to the finalization and filing process.
This position requires occasional in‑state travel, either locally within the Bay Area, or for one‑to‑three day overnight trips within California, based on assignments and as determined according to the needs of the Department.
This is a full‑time, Monday through Friday, position. Attorneys are expected to work all hours as necessary to accomplish their assignments, and although they will generally average a 40‑hour week, longer work hours may occasionally be required. There is some flexibility as to the specific work schedule, which will be determined after hire in consultation with the Chief Counsel or Assistant Chief Counsel.
Special RequirementsMust be a member of the California Bar and qualified to practice law in California. The minimum requirements are defined in the Class Specification for Attorney III.
