Overview
This is a hybrid on-site required role in Alameda, CA; relocation support will be provided for non-local candidates.
Position SummaryWe are partnered with an exciting company developing fully implantable Class III medical devices at the forefront of therapeutic and diagnostic medicine. This is a principal-level role for a seasoned embedded software engineer ready to own firmware architecture, drive security strategy, and mentor a high-performing team — all while staying deeply hands-on in one of the most technically demanding domains in medtech.
Responsibilities- Define and own long-range firmware architecture, setting engineering standards across embedded subsystems
- Lead design, implementation, and verification of safety-critical firmware including power management, ASIC interfaces, and BLE communication stacks
- Own BLE security architecture end-to-end: secure pairing/bonding, AES-CCM encryption, MITM protection, secure key storage, firmware signing, and threat modeling
- Optimize RF/BLE power delivery and control systems, maximizing software reuse across multiple products
- Design data infrastructure routing information from embedded processors to application software, cloud backend, and configuration services
- Lead embedded software verification to medical regulatory standards
- Mentor engineers, drive code review standards, and contribute to Dev Ops and onboarding processes
- B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field with 10+ years of C/C++ embedded development, or M.S. with 8+ years
- Demonstrated BLE security experience: AES-CCM encryption, secure pairing/bonding, MITM protection, key storage, and firmware signing
- Deep expertise in Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) for embedded platforms
- Proven track record leading firmware architecture decisions and mentoring engineering teams
- Experience with IEC 62304, ISO 14971, and/or ISO 13485 preferred
- Prior Class II/III medical device experience strongly preferred
- Familiarity with threat modeling, security risk assessments, and technical design documentation a plus
