* * Position Summary
** The purpose of this position is to provide quality Group Fitness instruction to members of the public searching for better health and fitness.
MAJOR DUTIES
* Responsible for leading a variety of group exercise classes including step, kickboxing, group cycling, power pump, senior citizens, etc.
* Identify and correct any exercise performed incorrectly by a participant.
* Provide exercise modifications for participants with specific needs (i.e., back and shoulder injuries, pregnancy, new exercisers, etc.).
* Teach students to monitor their heart rate during group the exercise sessions.
* Teach participants how to utilize either the Karvonen Formula or Age Predicted Maximal Heart Rate Formula to figure out their target heart rate zone.
* Take one 10 second heart rate at some point during the cardio portion of the class and one 10 second heart rate before beginning floor work to make sure participant heart rates are below 100 bpm.
* Provide music that is appropriate in nature and speed for class format.
* Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
* CPR and First Aid certification required.
* Must possess basic fitness knowledge and have experience leading a variety of group exercise classes.
* Experience working with senior citizens.
* Must possess outstanding communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work positively and professionally with community and college members.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Coordinator of Health and Wellness Programs assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks work while in progress and once completed for compliance with procedures, and accuracy of the work.
GUIDELINES The Guidelines include HHPC Policies, San Juan College Employee Handbook, ADA regulations, and other college and program policies and procedures. These guidelines are clear and specific in their application
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
* The work consists of routine group fitness training duties. The variety of customer needs contributes to the complexity of the position.
* The purpose of this position is to provide quality group fitness instruction to members of the public.
CONTACTS
* Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, and members of the general public.
* Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
* The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment that require a high degree of dexterity.
* The work is typically performed in an office. The employee is exposed to noise.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
* Must be certified as a Group Fitness Instructor.
