Job Goal

Provide short-term or long-term support to schools and students. Substitute positions include Substitute Teacher, Substitute Educational Assistant, Substitute Secretary, Substitute Food Service Worker, or Substitute Custodian, varying by school need.

Education, Experience, and Licensure Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • (Instructional Services) Substitute license (Pre-K - 12) required to authorize a trained individual to provide temporary instructional services when an assigned licensed teacher is absent from class. Learn more at NMPED Substitute License information.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
  • Good personal hygiene.
  • Pleasant and mature individual who can work effectively with adults and students.
  • Ability to work as a team member and adjust to frequent changes in workload and conditions.
  • Ability to follow requirements, rules, and regulations as set forth in the substitute handbook.
  • Ability to follow requirements, rules, and regulations as set forth by Board Policy.
  • Ability to remain “on‑call” and be available as needed.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions and job task requirements.
  • Detail-oriented and able to follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • Able to cultivate relationships with pupils in a brief time period.
Essential Functions
  • Direct the classroom, accomplishing curriculum objectives and goals outlined in the lesson plans.
  • Comply with all procedures, guidelines, and policies of the school at all times.
  • Maintain a professional attitude in all manner of conduct with students, faculty, and parents, including a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ensure a sustainable relationship with parents, pupils, school personnel, and members of the public by communicating in a confidential, polite and refined manner.
  • Report to the principal or school secretary upon arrival at the school.
  • Maintain, as fully as possible, the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
  • Consult, as appropriate, with the principal or department or grade level head before initiating any teaching or other procedures not specified in the lesson plans.
  • Use appropriate judgment to act in the best interests of students at all times.
  • Comply with all District Customer Service policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate supervisor or administrator.
  • Work with students to help reinforce learning objectives.
  • Maintain a classroom environment which promotes active learning.
  • Serve as a responsible role model in appearance and conduct.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and sanitation policies of the School District and notify the proper authorities when repairs or replacements are required to maintain established standards.
  • Demonstrate cooperation and flexibility in performing other related duties as assigned by school administration.
Terms of Employment

Individual is on an “on‑call” basis with pay rate based on Substitute Pay Scale.

Conditions of Employment

Ability to comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and, upon an offer of employment, complete an Employee’s Statement of Health and submit to a functional capacity evaluation at the District’s expense to determine ability to perform job-related functions and fitness for duty. Any offer of employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of all background, criminal, and reference investigations.
