Overview

New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) provides civil legal services to low-income New Mexicans for a variety of legal issues including domestic violence/family law, consumer protection, housing, and benefits. NMLA has locations throughout the state including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Gallup, Roswell, Silver City, Clovis, Hobbs, Las Vegas, Taos, and Santa Ana Pueblo.

Position

Managing Attorney – Statewide Housing Stability Program Flexible Location in New Mexico

Flexible Location in New Mexico. The position can be based in any NMLA office, with a preference for central location in the Albuquerque office.

Reports to the Litigation Director and works closely with the grants manager to build programs and meet grant outcomes.

Position Description

NMLA seeks a Managing Attorney for its Statewide Housing Stability Program. This role will manage statewide and local programs that provide legal services to households facing loss or instability of shelter.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals and grant reports
  • Perform and oversee outreach
  • Build collaborative relationships with community resources
  • Supervise and mentor attorneys, paralegals, and other staff and volunteers
  • Perform administrative duties and collaborate with other members of NMLA's management team
  • Carry a caseload as sole counsel or co-counsel for low-income individuals and families in Housing Stability, including:
    • Eviction prevention
    • Eviction diversion
    • Habitability
    • Reasonable accommodations
    • Subsidized housing
    • Low Income Housing Tax Credit
    • Other housing related work
  • Be active in local bar and community activities
  • Participate in community education and outreach to eligible clients
  • Recruitment of and collaboration with pro bono attorneys
