What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Year Round - R&D Undergraduate Intern to work in a multidisciplinary materials research laboratory. This opportunity will involve hands‑on training in a materials chemistry laboratory that explores the interfaces between chemistry, electrochemistry and materials science. Successful candidates will have a strong academic background with a major in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or a related field.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Perform experimental laboratory research tasks following established safety and environmental protection practices
- Perform daily experiments using chemicals and electrical test equipment
- Perform materials preparation (sample substrates, buffers, reaction solutions, wet chemical synthesis, etc.)
- Perform experiments to test and characterize various materials through electrochemical and spectroscopic methods
- Transport chemicals and/or experimental samples between labs
- Maintain lab cleanliness, clean and store glassware, and ensure proper disposal of chemical waste
- Perform research under the supervision of the principal investigator
- Discuss and establish experimental tasks
- Perform data analysis
- Report and discuss results
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary RangeAt Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. QualificationsWe Require
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
- Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
- Pursuing a degree in one of the following areas:
Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Physics - Experience and working knowledge of basic laboratory skills and practices
- Ability to follow processes and directions accurately
- Ability to work successfully on a team
- Demonstrated self‑motivation and independence
- Excellent written and oral communication skills

About Our TeamThe Ceramics & Materials Physics Department provides innovation in the design, synthesis and development of advanced, multifunctional materials to satisfy unique needs in electronic, electrochemical, thermochemical, optical, catalytic, and structural applications. We control chemical and structural characteristics, from the nanoscale to the macroscale, in organic, inorganic and hybrid systems to explore new material constructs and strategies aimed at enhancing material performance.
The multidisciplinary department conducts research and development for national security, energy & climate, and nuclear deterrence, partnering with government, industry, and academic institutions. We work closely with component design and production groups to ensure electronic materials and devices function as intended. Research thrusts include passive and active materials for electronic, electromechanical, and photonic systems; materials for extreme environments (thermal, radiation, electric field, shock);
and materials for renewable energy processes.
