ALAMOSA COUNTY, Road & Bridge Department, Maintenance Tech I

REPORTS TO: Road & Bridge Director

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SALARY RANGE: $18.00-$19.50/hour DOE

JOB SUMMARY

A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), preferably Class A, is required. The role operates and maintains trucks to transport materials to and from specified destinations and operates other light trucks and equipment used in the maintenance of county roads. The job involves manual labor at least 50% of the time, 35% driving trucks and equipment, and 15% other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operate tandem-axle trucks with snow plow and sander, tilt bed trailer, belly-dump trailer, small backhoe, and steel and rubber-tired rollers.
  • Operate additional equipment as needed and as part of on‑the‑job training.
  • Service and make minor repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Inspect truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water.
  • Perform emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, tire chains, and spark plugs.
  • Secure cargo by positioning blocks and tying rope around items.
  • Conduct manual work—including spreading gravel, patching potholes, repairing or replacing culverts, fences, cattle guards, removing rocks, trees, and debris from roads and right‑of‑ways, and trimming trees and brush.
  • Direct traffic at job sites when necessary.
  • Operate heavy equipment up to 25% of the year.
  • Perform sign shop duties including layout and fabrication of signs.
  • Maintain truck logs in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive instructions.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Road and Bridge Director.
  • Work schedule as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Show up for work on time and ready to work.
  • Follow the policies and procedures of Alamosa County.
  • Meet the listed physical requirements.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge:

  • Direct traffic at job sites.
  • Maintain truck logs per state and federal regulations.
  • Operate heavy machinery.

Skills:

  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings to customers, clients, and other employees.

Abilities:

  • Communicate efficiently in English, both written and verbal.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagram instruction.
  • Handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Perform basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rates, ratios, percent, and interpreting bar graphs.
  • Write simple correspondence.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience; or one to three months related experience or training.
  • CDL Class A Driver’s License required with no Air Brake Restriction “E” or “L.”
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS , WORK CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

Requires 24‑hour, seven‑day coverage with potential for overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. The position involves moderate to heavy physical tasks such as snow removal and grounds maintenance, including spreading gravel, patching potholes, and removing rocks, trees, and debris. Frequent use of hands, arms, and feet to manipulate tools and controls is required. Tasks may involve tipping, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 40 pounds regularly, and up to 100 pounds occasionally.

Operations occur in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, and high winds, and in environments that can be very noisy. Hearing and vision must be correctable to normal ranges. The employee must have the ability to drive and perform manual labor while maintaining safety and awareness on county roads.
