Position OverviewWe are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Benefits Accountant I to join a growing finance team in Anchorage. This position plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy of employee benefit accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting foundation, excellent Excel skills, and the ability to manage large volumes of financial data with precision.
Key Responsibilities- Reconcile employee benefit deductions from payroll to Accounts Payable vendor payments.
- Reconcile benefit-related General Ledger accounts and ensure account balances are accurate and properly supported.
- Research, investigate, and resolve discrepancies involving payroll deductions, benefit elections, and vendor invoices.
- Collaborate with Human Resources and Payroll teams to ensure accurate employee benefit records and reporting.
- Assist with annual financial statement audits and 401(k) audits by preparing schedules, supporting documentation, and process narratives.
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to accounting and reconciliation processes.
- Maintain accurate financial records while meeting deadlines and compliance requirements.
- Support special projects and perform additional accounting duties as assigned.
- Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and General Ledger reconciliations.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including formulas, data manipulation, and spreadsheet management.
- Ability to process and analyze large volumes of financial data with a high degree of accuracy.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to successfully pass a drug screen, background check, reference check, and credit check.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
- Experience with employee benefits accounting, payroll deductions, or benefits administration.
- Experience using Deltek Costpoint or similar accounting software.
- Knowledge of accounting procedures, financial records, and reconciliation practices.
- Ability to identify discrepancies and recommend solutions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Ability to read and understand contracts, agreements, policies, and procedures.
- Professional and effective communication skills when working with employees, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
This position operates in a professional office environment and requires strong time management and organizational skills. Occasional overtime may be necessary during audit periods and month-end or year-end close processes.
