Job Responsibilities Assessment: Conducting assessments to determine students' visual abilities, learning needs, and appropriate instructional strategies.Individualized Instruction: Developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) that address students' specific needs and goals.Curriculum Adaptation: Modifying curriculum materials and teaching methods to accommodate students with visual impairments, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.Braille Instruction: Providing instruction in Braille literacy and technology to students who use Braille as their primary reading and writing medium.Assistive Technology: Utilizing and teaching students how to use assistive technology tools and devices that support their learning and independence.Collaboration: Collaborating with other educators, parents, and related service providers to create a comprehensive support system for students with visual impairments.Advocacy: Advocating for students' needs and rights within the school and community, promoting awareness and accessibility for individuals with visual impairments.Qualifications
Education: A bachelor's or master's degree in education with a specialization in visual impairment or blindness is typically required.Certification: Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) is usually required. This certification may be obtained through state-specific requirements or national organizations such as the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).Experience: Previous experience working with students with visual impairments or disabilities, preferably in an educational setting, is often preferred or required.Knowledge: Strong knowledge of Braille, orientation and mobility techniques, assistive technology, and best practices in teaching students with visual impairments.Skills: Effective communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and instructional skills are essential for success as a TVI.Licensure: Some states may require additional licensure or endorsements for teaching students with visual impairments.#J-18808-Ljbffr
